10:00 AM Are You Ready To "Stop, Drop & Mud?" Get Ready For May 13th!
Mountain Ranch, CA...What is the Stop, Drop & Mud? This race is designed to be a fitness challenge, pitting First Responders (Fire, EMS, Law Enforcement) and Military against the general public.  Show us what you’ve got! We are proud to be bringing a mud run to Mountain Ranch this year — the first of its kind!  We are planning on approximately 16 obstacles along the route that will range from fire fighter skills to strength and endurance tests.
Participants will start and finish at the Mountain Ranch Park in the heart of Mountain Ranch.  All participants will receive a 2017 Stop, Drop & Mud shirt.

Participant are welcome to walk or run the course.  All obstacles are designed to be challenging but are accomplishable by people of all ages and abilities.

Obstacle Course

Obstacle course races have become one of the most popular events in the running world in the last five years. There are races out there that have you run through mud, bounce down slides or even get splattered with paint.  We wanted to have more of a fire fighter theme to this run.  The Stop, Drop & Mud Firefighter Challenge has several firefighter themed obstacles that give you a glance of the life of a firefighter.  You will battle through 16 different obstacles that will challenge your strength, stamina and endurance.

Runners will run the race in a wave format beginning at 10:00 a.m. and every 30 minutes thereafter.  All participants in the Stop, Drop & Mud will receive the 2017 race shirt.  This race is open to anyone age 13 and up.

Why Run it?

The Stop, Drop & Mud is hosted by the Central Calaveras Firefighters Association.  When you run in some of the larger obstacle races you are supporting a company that is hosting the race and then donating a very small percentage of the funds to some charity.  Our race is different.  Every single aspect of the race is planned, constructed and organized by our Volunteer Firefighters and Association members.  Countless hours are spent to get this race ready for our participants.

Financially every single dollar that is raised goes directly to supporting Central Calaveras Fire & Rescue Protection District.  It is with fundraisers like this that allow the Association to purchase vital equipment for the Department that its dwindling annual budget can’t cover.

When you register for the Stop, Drop & Mud you are directly supporting Central Calaveras Fire & Rescue.  With this in mind we want to say thank you to everyone who has presently signed up and to those considering signing up!

Where does my race registration fee go?

All registration fees and sponsorships will go directly to purchase new SCBA’s (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) for the Central Calaveras Fire District.  Central Fire is currently using SCBA’s made in 2002 and Federal Law prohibits the use of SCBA’s more than 15 years old.  In June 2017 all 22 SCBA’s currently in use by Central Fire will no longer be usable.  It is fundraising events like the Stop, Drop & Mud 5K that allow us to purchase vital equipment for the Department that its dwindling annual budget can’t cover.

The Central Calaveras Firefighters Association is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit.  Our tax ID # is 45-2853418.

Independence Hall Community Center - History

Independence Hall Community Center, Arnold, California, was officially established in 1974. From its inception, the Hall has served as a non-profit, non-tax-supported community facility for the Ebbetts Pass area. Originally, the Hall was the Avery School, a one-room elementary school with a divider creating two classrooms.

The attendance area extended along California Highway 4 from Camp Connell nearly to Murphys. The first function to be held in the building was a school Christmas program in December, 1941. The school was rededicated in 1964 as Hazel Fisher Elementary School in honor of its first principal and teacher, Miss Hazel Fisher. Following construction of a new Hazel Fisher Elementary School, the original building was signed over to the Ebbetts Pass Wonderland Association and in recognition of our nation’s bicentennial was renamed Independence Hall. The Hall was dedicated and remains this area’s community center.

04:00 PM - 06:00 PM Mountain Melody Concert "Colors Of Spring"
Spring 2017 is shaping up to be a very colorful time of year for Mountain Melody Women's Chorus.

"Colors of Spring" is the title of their upcoming concert series. The concert includes several lovely tunes sung in Spanish, "De Colores" and "Duermete Nino."
A delightful a capella tune, "Chili Con Carne," which uses all kinds of rhythm and percussion sounds as well as melodic lines, also has a spicy Latin flavor.

Other jazzy offerings are the classic song, "Where or When," and the melodic favorite, "Long Ago and Far Away."

The vibrancy and beauty of Calaveras County is reflected in many of our musical offerings. Spring in the countryside is definitely the time to enjoy the richness and color of vocal ensemble singing.

Angelis is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning composer and violin virtuoso who has successfully transcended artistic boundaries – her music is built on a solid classical foundation, but the inspiration flows freely from Eastern Europe, Russia, and Spain.  Angelis’ brilliant compositions showcase the beauty, power, and excitement of her playing. With heels clicking and with heartwarming humility, Angelis mesmerizes her audiences. Playing drums with her will be Mark Dyken. Part of the event’s proceeds will go for the facility care of guitarist Josef Gault, husband of Angelis.

Angelis music has been featured on network TV, PBS, NPR, and during the 2000 Olympics, when world champion gymnast Kui Yuanyuan of China used Kim’s music for her floor exercise. For ten years, Angelis’ first CD, Violin Voyager, resided on the Taiwanese Billboard charts. The film Sweet Nothings features her music, which was nominated for Best Original Score by the California Independent Film Society and Best Score by the International Independent Film Tour. The 2005 release, Gypsy’s Odyssey, made Top Ten lists from Santa Cruz, CA, to Herford, Germany. In 2007, her song, “Zingaro!” won Global Rhythm Magazine’s international songwriting competition. She’s been recognized by the American Society of Composers and Publishers for her creative contributions to American music. In 2014, Kim Angelis was honored to represent the United States at Beijing World Music Week and at the Beishan World Music Festival in China.

The Friends of Rail Road Flat School operates as a non-profit organization under the auspices of the Blue Mountain Community Renewal Council. As such, all donations are tax deductible and can be sent to BMCRC at P.O. Box 223, Rail Road Flat, CA 95248.

Vallecito, CA...Twisted Oak Winery is pleased to announce the first concert of our 2017 Twisted Folk Concert Series – the return of The Dustbowl Revival. "Last year we kicked our season off with The Dustbowl Revival, and talk about starting with a bang!" said winery owner Jeff Stai. “DBR was one of our most popular shows for 2016. Bringing them back was a no-brainer! And, don’t forget to bring a lampshade!”

A yummy bratwurst sandwich dinner – pork, chicken, or vegetarian - with a side salad will be available for purchase, along with yummy Twisted Oak wine, popcorn, and soft drinks. Concertgoers are welcome to bring their own picnics and non-alcoholic drinks, but we ask that no outside alcoholic beverages be brought in.

Seating at Twisted Folk concerts is outdoor festival style, first-come, first-served – bring a low beach-type chair or a blanket. We’re on top of a hill and there is always an evening breeze – it can get a little chilly after dark so please plan ahead.

Twisted Oak Winery is located in the foothills of Calaveras County, and specializes in wines made from Mediterranean varieties like Tempranillo, Viognier, and Petite Sirah. We’re also known for being the home of the world-famous “Rubber Chicken National Forest.” Our concert venue, located at the winery in Vallecito, sits on a hilltop that commands a sweeping view of the Sierra Nevada and the surrounding foothills, presided over by a 350-year old California Blue Oak that graces the label of every wine we bottle.

“Best Live Band in LA” - LA Weekly

Over the past few years, The Dustbowl Revival has been making a name for itself with a vibrant mix of vintage Americana sounds. Critics have proclaimed that this eclectic eight-piece “would have sounded utterly at home within the hallowed confines of Preservation Hall in New Orleans' French Quarter” (Los Angeles Times) and their “upbeat, old-school, All-American sonic safaris exemplify everything shows should be: hot, spontaneous, engaging and, best of all, a pleasure to hear” (L.A. Weekly). Rob Sheffield, in Rolling Stone, hailed them as a great band “whose Americana swing was so fun I went back to see them again the next day.”

Their new eponymous album, due out on Signature Sounds on June 16, 2017, however, finds the Los Angeles-based ensemble evolving and refining its music. Their always-joyous sound now reveals a more soulful, funky side that exudes deeper emotions and taps a more modern vibe.

This exhilarating new sound jumps out on the album’s opening tracks, “Call My Name” and “If I You Could See Me Now.” Drummer Joshlyn Heffernan and bassist James Klopfleisch lay down a righteous groove that trumpeter Matt Rubin and trombonist Ulf Bjorlin supercharge with their big blasts of horns. This Stax-style soul builds to a pair of showstoppers: “Good Egg” and “The Story.” The former is a dynamic number that showcases Liz Beebe’s sexy, full-throttled vocals as well as Bjorlin’s dirty trombone solo). On “The Story,” Beebe teams with band founder Zach Lupetin for an emotionally charged love song that features some infectious interplay between the horn players and the string-men (mandolinist Daniel Mark and fiddler Connor Vance).

The album’s first single, “Busted,” also exemplifies the sonic leap taken by the band. Spotlighted by Beebe’s slinky jazz vocals, the song mixes traditional American music styles, like the blast of R&B horns and the in-the-pocket drums, with some inventive touches, such as a mandolin plucked like a hip-hop inspired piano, and the upright bass and fiddle played through wah-peddles. The group has said that recording “Busted” was like a door opening for them to create something familiar yet stylistically fresh.

Even the album’s more acoustic number, like “Debtors’ Prison” and “Got Over,” aren’t as old-timey as they might first appear. “Debtors’ Prison” initially suggests a throwback busker tune, but a closer listen reveals an all-too-contemporary ode with Lupetin singing about the struggles of trying to survive in today’s troubled economic times. Similarly, on “Get Over,” Lupetin delivers another modern-day portrait about a scuffed-up soul battling a whirl of problems who winds up “sitting on the kitchen floor … eating all the ice cream, 2 a.m. on a Tuesday.” Things get a little more optimistic on the sunnier, Bill Withers-inspired “Honey I Love You.” Featuring a guest spot by multi-Grammy-winner and fellow genre-bender Keb’ Mo’, this track serves up a timeless slice of sweet, silky soul music.

The evolution in the band’s sound has been very much an organic one. Since Signature Sounds released their last album, With a Lampshade On, the Dustbowl Revival has been out on the road, winning over audiences with their free-flowing, joyous live performances. After playing more than 200 shows a year during the last four years, the Dustbowl Revival came to realize that they had outgrown the confining label of a retro-minded band playing music from a bygone era and needed to move in new directions.

To help them achieve their adventurous musical vision, the band turned to the Grammy Award-winning producer Ted Hutt, who brought with him a background of working with a musically diverse set of acts. A founding member of Irish-American Celtic punk band Flogging Molly, Hutt has not only produced punk groups like Dropkick Murphys and the Bouncing Souls, but also the progressive acoustic outfit Old Crow Medicine Show (whose 2014 release Remedy earned Hutt the Grammy), Memphis Americana rockers Lucero and New York City roots troubadour Jesse Malin. With Hutt’s assistance, the Dustbowl Revival created what they have called “the tightest, funkiest thing we’ve ever attempted.”

2017 marks the tenth anniversary of the Dustbowl Revival’s formation. It was back in 2007 when Lupetin, a Midwestern transplant to Los Angeles, posted an ad in Craigslist in hopes of creating a group inspired by brass band and string band traditions. Over the years, the group has been an inclusive outfit that frequently shifted in size before solidifying in its current eight-piece lineup.

In 2008, Zach Lupetin and the Dustbowl Revival released their debut album, The Atomic Mushroom Cloud of Love. They followed up in 2010 with You Can’t Go Back to the Garden of Eden, which included "Dan's Jam,” a song that won the Independent Music Awards’ “Americana Song of the Year.” The next year, the band, now known just as the Dustbowl Revival, put out Holy Ghost EP and their 2013 Carry Me Home CD featured more than 25 Dustbowl Revival-ists. That was also the year the L.A. Weekly crowned them the city’s “Best Live Band.”

The Dustbowl Revival found a bigger audience when Signature Sounds released With a Lampshade On in 2015. The video for “Never Had To Go,” starring band fan Dick Van Dyke, became an Internet sensation. The group went on to open for bands ranging from Lake Street Dive to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, while also appearing at such festivals as Delfest, Floydfest, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, and, more recently, Norway’s Bergenfest and Tonderfest in Denmark.
