All Day Something for Everyone at July 15 Murphys Homecoming
Murphys, CA...There will be something entertaining for each and every member of the family when the 69th edition of Murphys Homecoming is held Saturday, July 15 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in the cool environs of the Community Park. The day will kick off at 8 a.m. with a run/walk organized by Brian Klassen, who has staged many successful runs. Named the Firecracker Five, it will be five miles in length and is patterned after a foot race that was held in the area in the 70’s and 80’s. Participants will gather at the park and traverse a course that goes down Six Mile Road, past Ironstone Vineyards, returning to the park. Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories. Admission “cost” is a non-perishable food item that will be donated to the Murphys Pantry. Those wishing to register should call Klassen at 607-5073.

Starting at 11 a.m., and extending into the afternoon, there will be a wide variety of things to do for young people including crafts, fishing games, face painting, and a water slide.

From 11:30 to 1 p.m. rousing music provided by Mic Harper and the Calaveras Community Band will fill the air. Tracing its heritage to the gold rush days, the band plays a wide range of music from Sousa marches to popular show tunes. Its repertoire contains pieces for everyone’s musical taste.

Throughout the morning, and well into the afternoon, Helen’s Hut will be the place to go to purchase barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs, ice cream, and a wide variety of beverages including beer and wine.

A long-standing Homecoming tradition, the Old Timers Luncheon, sponsored by the Native Daughters of the Golden West, will be provided for any Murphys resident who has lived in the area for at least ten years and has reached the age of 70. Reservations are necessary and may be made by calling Mary Piumarta at 728-8392. The cut off date for reservations is July 12.

At 1 p.m. the first of three much anticipated duck races will be held for the benefit of the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Foundation. Information on how to participate is available at CalaverasMentoringFoundation.org.

During the afternoon there will be a variety of games for all ages including a three-legged race, an egg on a spoon competition, and a water balloon toss. There will also be a Dunk Tank where anyone may purchase a ball for one dollar to attempt to send a favorite local dignitary from his or her perch into a vat of cold water.

Another afternoon highlight will be the Murphys Cakewalk. A game, very popular in the 19th century, a cakewalk is much like musical chairs with delectable baked goods as prizes.

The day’s activities will conclude with the Second Annual Murphys Homecoming Bocce Ball Tournament starting at 6 pm. Organized by Jan Schulz and his Boccie Buddies, the tournament will feature 20 two-person teams that will descend on the recently improved bocce courts to vie for fame and prizes. “Commissioner” Schulz is taking reservations, and supplying information at 728-3753. Entry fee is $50 per team. The money raised will go to maintaining and improving the courts.

There is no admission charge for Murphys Homecoming and ample free parking is available nearby. Donations to help maintain the park are always gratefully received.

Murphys Community Park is located on Algiers St. in historic downtown Murphys. Membership in the Murphys Community Club is open to everyone and contributions are tax deductible. For further information, call 728-8093, or click on the Community Club link at visitmurphys.com.

Independence Hall Community Center - History

Independence Hall Community Center, Arnold, California, was officially established in 1974. From its inception, the Hall has served as a non-profit, non-tax-supported community facility for the Ebbetts Pass area. Originally, the Hall was the Avery School, a one-room elementary school with a divider creating two classrooms.

The attendance area extended along California Highway 4 from Camp Connell nearly to Murphys. The first function to be held in the building was a school Christmas program in December, 1941. The school was rededicated in 1964 as Hazel Fisher Elementary School in honor of its first principal and teacher, Miss Hazel Fisher. Following construction of a new Hazel Fisher Elementary School, the original building was signed over to the Ebbetts Pass Wonderland Association and in recognition of our nation’s bicentennial was renamed Independence Hall. The Hall was dedicated and remains this area’s community center.

01:30 PM Announcing the 24th Annual Murphys Duck Races!
Murphys, CA...Whether wading in the creek scooping up ducks or just enjoying a fun-filled afternoon in the park, just about everyone loves the Murphys Duck Races, part of Murphys Homecoming. This year’s event takes place Saturday, July 15, from about noon to about 3pm in Murphys Park. From 1pm to 2:30pm, there will be three different “races” in Murphys Creek. The Duckling Race kicks off at 1pm, with $3 tickets to vie for a chance to win JoMa’s ice cream, Angels Theater movie tickets, or a gift certificate to Murphys Toy Store. The Quacker Race starts at 1:30pm, and tickets are $5; winners in this event take home prizes like ice cream, movie tickets, or a Zip Line at Moaning Caverns. The finale is the Golden Goose Race at 2pm, in which $10 tickets put contestants in the running for golf at Sequoia Woods, fine dining at the Murphys Hotel, or a gift from Quyle Kilns. After each “heat,” all the kids help corral and collect the hundreds of rubber duckies that have been floating merrily downstream.

To make the races fair for everyone, winners are randomly selected from among all ticket holders. Tickets are available at select times in front of Sierra Hills Market or online at calaverasmentoringfoundation.org.

The Murphys Duck Races is a fundraiser for the Calaveras Mentoring Foundation, which raises awareness and funds for youth mentoring in Calaveras County, especially the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program. The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program connects local youth with safe, positive mentors who offer friendship, opportunity, and support for making healthy life decisions. To learn more about how to support this important program, please visit the Calaveras Mentoring Foundation website at CalaverasMentoringFoundation.org.

05:00 PM The Bluz Hounds the Beer Garden at Camp Connell on July 15
Camp Connell, CA...Since 1929 The Camp Connell General Store has been serving generation after generation of customers. New Owner Dan Tulipani and his family are excited to continue and expand on the rich fabric of history and traditions that have made the store an integral part of the community. With Dining, Wine, Beer, Gifts, Groceries & Gas they have everything you need to make your high country adventure a great one.

"I went into a General Store, they wouldn't let me buy anything specific..." Comedian Steven Wright

The story of Camp Connell Continues....

The Camp Connell of today was largely influenced by the surging popularity of auto travel through the mountains inspired when Dr. D. Sargent of Angels Camp became the first to drive an automobile over Ebbetts Pass in 1908. Family camping was destined to become an extremely popular recreational activity To meet those demands, Jack Connell began construction of a campground, cabins, general store and gas pumps in 1928. He and his wife named their endeavor "Camp Connell". Opened for business in 1929, the general store and gas station have been in operation ever since. The Connell's continued to expand the store and added a café to serve the increasing number of visitors. By 1934 the Post Office was moved to the store and became "Camp Connell Station". The store was a local gathering place where local residents and vacationers alike would come to share news and leave messages, much as it is today. Occasionally, Circuit Court was convened in the building. Monte Wolfe, Art and Harry Schimke, the Whittles, Hunts, Tryons, Lombardis, and Airolas were frequent visitors.

While the popularity of the general store and café continued, the campground was closed in 1949 and the property was subdivided into lots selling for $600 each. The cabins remained as part of Camp Connell until the 1960's, when the highway was realigned to accommodate the ski resort and village at Bear Valley, as well as the development of Big Trees Village. The old highway became the current two accesses to Camp Connell and the property has stayed much the same ever since.

Today the Camp Connell General Store is one of the oldest Chevron stations in California as well as the longest continuously operated retail business between Murphys and Markleeville. It is a popular stop for visitors and a cherished part of the local community."
