- Monsters, Magic & Mystery - Introducing the 16th Annual Trivia Bee!
- Monsters, Magic & Mystery - Introducing the 16th Annual Trivia Bee!
Calling all trivia buffs………It’s that time of year again! The Friends of the
Calaveras Library are sponsoring their 16th annual fun-filled evening of dinner
and trivia competition this March 23, 2013, at the San Andreas Town Hall. This
year’s theme “Monsters, Magic & Mystery” will provide plenty of material for the
Trivia Contest.

“Now is definitely the time for teams to get registered,” says Susan Sheehan,
committee member in charge of coordinating the signup and special services for
the competing 3-member teams. “Team sponsorships at the Queen Bee, Honey
Bee and Bumble Bee levels are available now. Each package includes different
amenities and value pricing; however, all of team-level purchases include contest
entry fees and dinner for each of the 3 team members. Sign-ups prior to March
1st entitle that team to receive one FREE BEE MULLIGAN. (Our popular “do
over” card.) Each team is limited to a total of two mulligans, available for $50
each the night of the event.

Individuals and non-team groups are encouraged to purchase their $25
Spectator BEE tickets for admission and dinner in advance as the event can
become standing room only for those who buy at the door.

In addition to the trivia bee competition and a superb dinner, the evening’s
activities will again include 2 Lightning Rounds for audience participation and
contests with prizes for the best costumes and table decorations. Pat Ross,
Program Coordinator for Calaveras Adult Literacy, and Mike Taylor who is well-
known as a local newspaper editor, will co-anchor the funny festivities as the
master of ceremonies and the quiz show host. Pat Ross stated, “I always look
forward to working with Mike, our very own Alex Trebek. He’s hilarious and really
gets into the spirit of things. Of course, there IS the little matter of the flamboyant
gold sequined dinner jacket he flaunted last year in the ‘All Things Golden’
costume contest………….I just can’t stand being out-dressed by a guy!”
The competitive spirit is certainly alive and well at this annual tournament. A
first-time team entry last year, the West Point “Know-It-Alls”, managed a
championship coup over about 20 other teams that included frequent winners,
the “Paddleheads”, from Angels Camp. Winning team member Joan Jessup
commented that their team just barely stayed alive during the first rounds, and
then their strategy of having all 3 members with very different areas of expertise
really paid off in the end. Asked for her reaction as a first time competitor Joan
said, “It was an absolute blast! We managed to win and we’re proud of it. We’ll
be back this year to defend our title against all contenders.”
