Curtin Mansion Open House September 14
Curtin Mansion Open House September 14
Sonora, CA...The Tuolumne County Historical Society (TCHS) will host an open house fundraiser at the historic Curtin Mansion on Columbia Way in Sonora on Saturday, Sept. 14. After years of deterioration, the mansion has undergone an extensive restoration over the past two years by the current owner, Steve Case. The open house may be one of the few occasions to tour one of Sonora’s finest examples of Victorian architecture, according to Joe Sparagna, event organizer and chairman of the TCHS Landmarks Committee...

Tickets for the 2 to 6 p.m. event may be purchased for $25 per person online at www.TCHistory.org or at the Tuolumne County Museum, Mountain Home Gifts, Tuolumne County Visitor Bureau at Day-O Plaza and Mountain Bookshop. Tickets will not be available at the door.

TCHS’s event will consist of an open house with docents in period dress throughout the home and grounds to provide information and answer questions. A number of before and during restoration photos will be on display to show the complexity and scope of the project.

Inside the home a selection of 1900’s vintage clothing from the Tuolumne County Museum collection will be on display. Outside on the lawn, refreshments will be served consisting of champagne mimosas to persons 21 years or older. Each $25 ticket will include two mimosas.

Earlier this year TCHS honored Case for his restoration work with its Heritage Home award at its annual Lamplight dinner.
“The Curtin Mansion is important to the heritage of downtown Sonora and Tuolumne County,” Sparagna said.
The home was built by District Attorney John B. Curtin in 1897. Curtin successfully ran for California State Senator in 1898. After his death his widow, Lucy Shaw Curtin, continued to live in the home into the 1940’s. At her death the home changed ownership several times. Over the last 60 years the home had fallen into disrepair both inside and out.

“Case has brought this elegant historical home to its former splendor,” Sparagna said.
Proceeds from the event will benefit TCHS’s operation of the Tuolumne County Museum and programs including 4th grade school history tours of Sonora, new museum exhibits, publication of the society’s Chispa periodical and research on local history.
