In all of 1849, 90,000 hopefuls traveled by land and by sea to try their hand at one of the greatest lotteries nature had created. From then on, they would always be known as the 49ers.
One particular individual, Rhode Islander Henry Pinkney Angell, opened the first store in a tent near what is now known as Angels Creek. He established himself as the first merchant of the new camp, selling necessities to his once fellow miners.
People from all over the world rushed to Angels Camp; an estimated 3,500 Chinese miners alone found their way to Calaveras County by 1860.
In the new exhibit, visitors can view historical artifacts from the museum's extensive collections including horn spoons for gold dust, a Utica Mine manager's monthly time book, items from the Calaveras Hotel that burned down, a 1858-1865 ledger from John Peirano's Store once located on Main Street and Birds Way in downtown Angels, frog carriers from the 1958 international frog jump, and a late 1800s commercial laundry stove believed to have been used in a Chinese laundry located on Birds Way. The exhibit also includes historical images and a beautiful artwork titled "Chinese Family Laundry, 1880s" by renowned artist Mian Situ who generously provided permission to use a reproduction of his artwork.
