First San Andreas Gateway Corridor Study Community Meeting Scheduled
San Andreas, CA...The County of Calaveras and the Calaveras Council of Governments (CCOG) have scheduled a community meeting to launch the San Andreas Gateway Corridor Study. Community Meeting #1 will be held: Wednesday, May 11, 2016. San Andreas Town Hall, 24 Church Hill Road, San Andreas. 5:30 p.m. – Open House/Registration 6:00 p.m. – Presentation/Formal Meeting

County Planning Director Peter Mauer expressed excitement about the new study. “The undeveloped southern gateway to San Andreas is an opportunity for community and economic development. Both have been stifled in the past by missing details of a coordinated transportation vision between the County and Caltrans. This study will result in a long-range vision and an implementation plan that removes many of the historic barriers to new development.”

In addition to the southern gateway, the study will look for opportunities to improve all elements of an effective transportation system along the entire State Route 49 corridor through San Andreas, including pedestrian, bicycle, and transit facilities, and the connections between each mode.

“This study is funded by a Caltrans partnership grant, and we are fortunate to have a strong management team from the local Caltrans District that is interested in meeting the community’s needs for our “Main Street” while preserving a safe, functioning State Highway,” said Amber Collins, Project Manager for the Calaveras Council of Governments. “Prior planning efforts stopped just short of developing a shared vision between the community, local government, and Caltrans.”

The purpose of the May 11 Community Meeting is to get up-front input before any new transportation planning work on the project begins. Topics of discussion will include the following.

What is the community vision for the future of San Andreas?
What role does or should San Andreas fulfill in the immediate area and county-wide region?
Prior plans, including the San Andreas Rural Mobility Plan.
Opportunities and challenges that are anticipated.
Other hopes and dreams for the study, and any fears and concerns.
Schedule for the study, including future opportunities for additional community input.
“Strong community participation at the first meeting is very important,” said Todd Tregenza, Project Manager for Omni Means, the consultant selected to complete the project. “We need the community’s help to identify opportunities, and areas of concern in order to develop the best alternatives.”

Community input will inform preliminary alternatives that will be discussed at a second community meeting. At least two additional community meetings are planned in the future months as project concepts are developed, and then are refined into a draft plan for the southern State Route 49 Gateway.

Meeting #2: community review of preliminary concepts.

Meeting #3: community review of the Draft Plan.
