Watercolor Art Class Watercolor Portrait from Photographs with Maggie Sloan ~ Copperopolis
Watercolor is the perfect medium for painting translucent, sensitive portraits. Learn how to choose a photo, draw your image, and paint a portrait in watercolor. Using demonstrations, practice exercises, and fearless paint slinging, Maggie will teach you to trust in your paint, brushes, water, and your intuitions. Bring your watercolor painting supplies, drafting tape, paper towels, and some photos of people you’d like to paint. We’ll go through them on the first day and talk about what makes a good photo for a painted portrait.
Maggie uses Arches #300 hot press. It’s heavy enough to take wet washes without buckling and you don’t have to stretch it. The surface is more absorbent than lighter weight paper, and withstands multiple layers of paint and scrubbing.  She suggests buying a half sheet and having it cut into 4 pieces to begin with (Larry will cut this for you and also has ready-made mats to fit this size). You will probably want a larger piece for your final portrait.  Also have some scraps of hot press watercolor paper for testing your colors.   Maggie uses sable brushes, all rounds: #16 (very large), #7, and #3. There are some good quality synthetics if you don’t wish to use sable. She does not use flats at all, except for scrubbing when she needs to erase something.
Please bring a roll of paper towels or several flour sack dishtowels and a drawing board large enough to fit your paper. Maggie uses gatorboard or foamboard (both available at THA’s and clear plastic pins to hold her paper to the board. Also, please choose a palette with deep paint wells and plenty of mixing space.   A portrait to trace will be available for beginners.  Class size: 3-16 students.  Color list is available at sign-up.  Cost of each class is $30, or three for $75.
