LECTURE "From Slavery to the Smithsonian" |
by Sylvia Roberts
In her presentation, Sylvia Roberts will share her journey from a fledgling researcher, through her discovery of the existence of thousands of long-forgotten but well-documented early African American pioneers, to her role in the representation of this history in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.
Sylvia Roberts is an historian and genealogist who lives in Jamestown, California. She is the author of Mining for Freedom: Black History Meets the California Gold Rush. Roberts is a 25-year resident of Tuolumne County, a long time member and past president of the Tuolumne County Historical Society, and current Board Member of the Tuolumne County Genealogical Society. She is the proud recipient of the Mother Lode Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee’s Humanitarian Award for her foundational work in African American history. As a graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where she was born and raised, Roberts is currently researching her maternal grandparents, including ancestors both slave and free, and writing her second book.
