Valley Springs, CA...On 12-15-18 a Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Deputy contacted Edward Pereira (age 45 of Campo Seco) who was driving in the area of Campo Seco. At the time of this contact, Pereira presented documentation of temporary vehicle registration. The Deputy was suspicious about the validity of the paperwork and after the contact further follow-up was conducted through the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Squatters Arrested for Burglary and Other Charges in Copperopolis |

Copperopolis, CA...On 12-16-18 the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office received a report of subjects possibly living in or “squatting” in a vacant residence. Deputies initiated an investigation into the property located in the 4000 block of Edgewater Court in Copperopolis. Deputies were able to confirm that this residence was not “vacant”. Deputies made contact with the home owner out of county who confirmed that no one should be living at the house which contained a number of valuable items. During the early morning on 12-17-18 Deputies responded to the residence and were able to see two subjects inside. Deputies formed a perimeter around the property for the burglary in progress and made several announcements for subjects to come out. With no response from inside, deputies made entry and arrested two subjects from inside the house. The arrestees were identified as Larry Vannatta (age 44 of Copperopolis) and Cathryn Walter (age 45 of Angels Camp).

Border Patrol Detects Second Ultralight Aircraft in as Many Days & Arrest Chinese Nationals |

Calipatria, CA....El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents tracked an ultralight aircraft that made a cross-border incursion from Mexico and landed in the United States on Tuesday morning. At approximately 1:54 a.m., Border Patrol agents on the ground were informed by CBP components of an ultralight aircraft detected flying over the international border from Mexico into U.S. airspace. The aircraft was operating without any lights.

Sacramento, CA...New laws approved by the California Legislature in 2018 will affect roadway safety in several ways, including helmet use on bicycles and motorized scooters, hit-and-run on bicycle paths, modified exhaust systems, and enhanced safety for refuse collection vehicles. To support its mission of providing the highest levels of Safety, Service, and Security, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is highlighting several of these new laws.

Attorney General Becerra: Murder Conviction of California Doctor Who Recklessly Prescribed Deadly Opioids Upheld on Appeal |

Sacramento, CA...California Attorney General Xavier Becerra and his legal team secured a critical victory in the fight against opioid abuse when the California Court of Appeal upheld the second-degree murder conviction of a former osteopathic doctor, Hsiu Ying Tseng. Tseng was convicted on February 5, 2016, of second-degree murder for the prescription drug overdoses of three of her patients: Vu Nguyen, Steven Ogle, and Joseph Rovero. Tseng was also convicted of 19 counts of unlawful controlled substance prescription and one count of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud. The trial court sentenced Tseng to 30 years to life in state prison.

San Andreas, CA...From CHP San Andreas Office..."Once again Calaveras County came through for the children of our community. Our annual “CHIPS for Kids” toy drive was a huge success again. We were worried that toy collections would be down this year due to the Camp Fire but from the looks of it that is not a concern. Thank you to all that donated!"
