Hoe-down! Whiskerino Dinner Dance is April 14th

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/11/2018 09:08 AM
Angels Camp, CA....(Frogtown, USA)The Friends of the Calaveras County Fair and the Junior Livestock Committee are hosting a Hoe-down, Show-down. The Whiskerino Dinner Dance is planned for April 14. The dinner dance will be the official kick-off event leading up to the Calaveras County Fair & Jumping Frog Jubilee May 17-20. The Whiskerino has a fine historic tradition in Calaveras County. Although the Whiskerino dates back to the 1940s it was revitalized in the 1950's and held for the next forty years. In 1955 Bob Petithome, Angels Camp resident, won the award for best full beard. He says the best part of the event was seeing "all the slick chins" try to grow beards. The event marked the month long Jubilee. Originally held at the Gun Club adjacent to the Fairgrounds, men and women donned their best gold rush attire. However the biggest draw was the actual whisker competitions.

Some Seasonal Roads on Stanislaus National Forest May Remain Closed Past April 15

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/10/2018 08:55 PM
Sonora, CA...Stanislaus National Forest will open seasonal roads beginning April 15, but forest crews need to inspect the roads to ensure there was no damage from this year’s winter storms. Scott Tangenberg, deputy forest supervisor, said workers haven’t been able to inspect many forest roads yet because some are still covered with snow. “Traveling on wet or snowy roads can damage them, which is why we close them during the winter. Our employees follow the same direction that the public does: if the road is closed, only an emergency would allow access,” he added. “Our crews are just now beginning the inspections and we may find some damage that will require repairs before a road is passable.”
