Pink Shoes Kicking up Excitement for Steps to Kick Cancer Luncheon

San Andreas, CA...Pink shoes will be parading around Calaveras County prior to and at the Steps to Kick Cancer Luncheon on Oct. 24 at Mark Twain Medical Center. “Pink is the well known signature color for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October,” notes Debbie Sellick, president of the Calaveras Cancer Support Group. “So we figure it’s appropriate to have pink shoes kicking up excitement for this great event.” The luncheon is from 11:30 to 1 p.m. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Murphys, CA...The National Retail Federation (NRF) and Proper Insights & Analytics recently released a survey detailing back-to-school spending for the 2019 school year. The survey looks at how American families plan to shop for clothing, supplies, and other items for the school year. Record spending expected for 2019. As students prepare to go back to school and college, families are spending more than ever on school supplies. "Consumers are in a strong position given the nation's growing economy, and we see this reflected in what they say they will spend on back-to-class items this year," NRF president and CEO Matthew Shay said.

Angels Camp, CA...AMA Football and Cheer teams consist of boys and girls in the area of the Highway 4 corridor from Copperopolis, Angels Camp, Murphys and Arnold areas. Boys and girls from the ages of 7 to 14 are eligible to play. Our Football and Cheer Staff are run by 100% volunteers who emphasize fundamentals, teamwork, safety and sportsmanship. AMA Football and Cheer generally practice three days a week from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Copello Park, 700 Copello Drive, in Angels Camp. Our season begins July 31st and runs through the middle of November. We travel to locations around the Mother Lode and AMA is affiliated with the Foothill Youth Football League.

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) awarded Career and Technical Training (C&TT) scholarships to a total of twelve high school students during recent award night events. Three Calaveras High School students, seven Bret Harte High School students and two Mountain Oaks students each received $1,500.

Avery, CA...The Vallecito Union School District will hold a Public Hearing: 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2019, Hazel Fischer School 1605 Blagen Road, Arnold, CA. This Public Hearing will be held to determine whether each student has or will have sufficient textbooks and/or instructional materials in each subject consistent with the content and cycles of the state curriculum frameworks during the 2019/20 fiscal year.

Sheriff’s SWAT & Hostage Negotiation Team Conduct Training With CUSD Bus Drivers

Toyon, CA...On July 29, 2019, members of the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Sheriff’s SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team conducted training with the Calaveras Unified School District Transportation Department school bus drivers. As part of ongoing training, we reviewed procedures with the bus drivers as well as had open discussion on planning and scenarios. Thank you to CUSD for inviting us and for the opportunity to enhance school district preparedness and safety.

Sonora High Sports Team Coordinator & Coach Arrested on Sexual Abuse Charges

Sonora, CA...This afternoon a staff member from a Tuolumne County School was arrested as a result of a recent investigation into a sexual abuse allegation. The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office was notified of possible sexual abuse between a staff member and student at Sonora High School. The sexual abuse was reported to have begun when the student was 15-years-old. The suspect, 42-year-old Amy Denise Emerald, is a staff member who serves as a sports team coordinator and coach. The victim... was a former student and player. Detectives notified the Sonora High School Superintendent regarding the allegations and investigation to ensure the safety of students. An investigation was conducted, and it was determined there was enough evidence for an arrest.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park Was Filled on Discovery Day

Arnold, CA...We stopped by Calaveras Big Trees State Park on Saturday Morning to see how Discovery Day was going. It was going well and the park was packed as the first line of business was to find a parking spot. All of the main lots were filled and there were two spots left when we arrived. So based on the lack of parking evidence we deduced that Discovery Day was a unqualified success.
