Getting Our Kids Back To School

Valley Springs, CA...The Mark Twain Health Care District in partnership with Anthem Blue Cross (Medi-Cal) is offering routine school-required vaccinations. This partnership is a great step toward getting our kids back in the classroom. Students who are insured by Anthem (Medi-Cal) can simply call the clinic for guidance. The vaccination location will be the Valley Springs Health & Wellness Center, at the corner of Vista-del-Lago and Hwy 26 in Valley Springs. Please call (209) 772-7070 for an appointment.

“Neuroprosthesis” Restores Words to Man with Paralysis

San Francisco, CA...Researchers at UC San Francisco have successfully developed a “speech neuroprosthesis” that has enabled a man with severe paralysis to communicate in sentences, translating signals from his brain to the vocal tract directly into words that appear as text on a screen.

Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) awarded Career and Technical Training (C&TT) scholarships to a total of six high school students recently., Awards Nights were held in late May and early June. Three Calaveras High School students, two Bret Harte High School students and one Mountain Oaks student
each received $1,500.

Though the legend is inaccurate—hair that has already grown out of the follicle does not change color—a new study(link is external and opens in a new window) from researchers at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is the first to offer quantitative evidence linking psychological stress to graying hair in people.

Provisional Appointment of Trustee for Area 4

The Calaveras County Board of Education is honored to have a highly qualified addition to the board. Janet Jones Sterling was provisionally appointed to the board to represent Trustee Area 4 on June 7, 2021. Sterling will serve the provisional appointment until the term ends in December 2022. Trustee Area 4 serves the communities of Altaville, Angels Camp, Carson Hill, Copperopolis and Vallecito.

San Andreas, CA...CONGRATULATIONS to CAL FIRE Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit’s newest Engineers! Seven graduates completed the Company Officers Academy at the Ione Traning Center today. This accomplishment is the end result of seven weeks of intense training.
