Sally Kaplan Chosen As February 2016 Mentor of the Month |

Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is delighted to announce Arnold resident Sally Kaplan as its February 2016 Mentor of the Month. Sally and her husband David are successful documentary film makers. Sally first fell in love with Calaveras County when filming California Forever, a PBS special documenting California State Parks. She was so impressed by the beauty of Calaveras Big Trees State Park and the small town charm of Arnold and Murphys that she and David moved their business, Backcountry Pictures, from Los Angeles to Murphys. Objections to Disclosure of Student Records From Local Schools From CDE Lawsuit |

Morgan Hill, CA...In April 2012, the Morgan Hill Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association (plaintiffs) filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Education (CDE). As part of the litigation, which does not directly involve any specific School District, the plaintiffs are subpoenaing student data from the CDE's student database.

Update On The Precautionary (Now Lifted) Lockdown At Bret Harte High School |

Angels Camp, CA...We would like to thank Bret Harte Unified School District Superintendent Michael Chimente for some additional details on this mornings incident. "We did have a threat and the campus was placed on precautionary lockdown while ACPD, TCSO and other agencies did a sweep of the campus. The lockdown was lifted at 10:40am this morning. There were no shots fired, no injuries and everyone is safe."

Over 160 California Schools Adopt New Plant-Based Nutrition Program |

San Rafael, CA...International animal protection organization, In Defense of Animals, is pleased to announce that 166 California schools have joined the campaign for good health through plant-based nutrition program the Daily Scoop, led by Lean and Green Kids. The Daily Scoop features a series of fun, consistent and easy to understand daily nutrition tips for school kids with a strong focus on fruits, vegetables and bean-based protein meals. The tips are included in morning announcements or teachers' opening routines to incorporate nutrition education into daily practice.

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras Unified School District 2016/2017 Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten Registration is FEBRUARY 1, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. All elementary schools in the Calaveras Unified School District will be registering children for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten on February 1, 2016. Call the appropriate school listed below for an appointment. For Transitional Kindergarten: Children whose birthdates are from September 2, 2011 to December 2, 2011 are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten. For Regular Kindergarten: Children must be five years old by September 2, 2016. (Birthdates must be on or before September 1, 2011 to attend Kindergarten.)

The Christian Family Learning Center puts on a wonderful program annually that captures thy joy of the season. CFLC's program has become a must see event year after year. January is National Mentoring Month! |

Angels Camp, CA...This January marks the 15th annual National Mentoring Month, a campaign aimed at expanding quality mentoring programs and connecting more of our community’s young people with caring adults. Here in Calaveras County, the Calaveras County Office of Education administers three youth mentoring programs: Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program, FNL Mentoring, and SWAG Young Adult Mentoring. Both the Calaveras County Board of Education and the Board of Supervisors annually recognize National Mentoring Month and express their gratitude for our community’s volunteer mentors.

Columbia College Receives $960,000 State Grant for Apprenticeship Programs |

Columbia, CA...Columbia College has been awarded a two-year $960,000 grant to develop a new hospitality apprenticeship training program in partnership with two major local employers -- Black Oak Casino Resort in Tuolumne and Evergreen Lodge and Rush Creek Lodge near Groveland. The award, just announced by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO), is part of the new California Apprenticeship Initiative, aimed at broadening the range of apprenticeship programs available to California workers.

"Dinner With A Scientist" Celebrated The Love Of STEM |

San Andreas, CA....Students who came to dinner at Calaveras River Academy on November 19 not only got to eat a special meal, they got to learn how their bodies were processing every single bite. “Dinner with a Scientist” brought together 16 local and regional scientists with 20 teachers and 61 students from Calaveras and Amador counties for a three-course meal during which the scientists got to share their enthusiasm and advice about careers in technology and science. The evening was hosted by the Calaveras County Office of Education (CCOE).

Ribbon-cutting Ceremony to Celebrate the Columbia College Calaveras County Outreach Site |

Vallecito, CA...On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, Columbia College held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Calaveras Outreach facility in Vallecito. Joining the ceremony were members of the Calaveras Chamber of Commerce and Executive Director – Staci Johnston, Calaveras Board of Supervisors, Chair - Cliff Edson and member Debbie Ponte, Calaveras County Superintendent of Schools, Kathy Northington and other local community members. Many hours were involved getting the site ready, such as technology infrastructure and equipment, new carpeting, signage, extending the parking lot, etc. The site offers four classrooms and an area for Student Services support. Spring evening classes at the site include, Algebra II, English as a Second Language (intermediate and high beginning), and Introduction to Sociology.
