It’s that time of year again; time to head back to school. If your child is heading back to Bret Harte, prepare for some changes, some good, some not so good, and some experimental yet permanent. The aquatic center that has been getting a lot of the attention lately is just a part of what is in store for the students of Bret Harte this year....

Avery Middle School Summer Music Camp Brings the Sound of Music to Kids Hearts ~ by, Charity Maness

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/09/2010 07:08 PM
Last year the children of Avery Middle School were asked to write a letter to the school board detailing what life would be like without music. While some were profound and eloquent, the basic message was, “life would be pretty boring” said Booster President and mom Vicki Johnson. While most school districts across the state and the country are seeing huge cuts to the arts budget Vicki says that strong community, teacher and parent collaboration and involvement keep their music, art, and sports programs up and running. “We all work together for the benefit of the students.” Music instructor Patty Struvie reiterates those same thoughts, commending the community, teachers, and parents for their support and collaboration....

OP-Ed…Summer 2010~by Mark Campbell, CUSD Superintendent

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/12/2010 07:51 PM
As we enter into a new school year, it is important to keep the community aware of the challenging issues facing the Calaveras Unified School District and what we are doing in response. It is no secret that we are enduring significant fiscal challenges at the state and local level with no real indication that we will see improvements in the near future. The resulting impact on our district budget, coupled with our dramatically declining enrollment, has put our district in a position where we have to make profound and painful decisions in an effort to remain fiscally solvent.....

Final Budget approved for Mark Twain School District: Layoffs Postponed, Deep Cuts Imminent~by Charity Maness

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/01/2010 03:54 PM
Mark Twain Elementary School District is no stranger to last minute budget balancing acts, and by no means insulated from the current financial woes that seem to be affecting every aspect of our states basic services. With a projected “shortfall of $825,000 going into the 2010/2011 school year” some hefty and costly cuts needed to be made by the deadline on June 30, 2010. With state funding obsolete and blatantly lacking equality, union contracts approved in 2006 but not funded since 2008, and a large number of students seeking alternative forms of education (homeschooling, .....

Arnold, CA....It was the last day of school for Hazel Fischer Elementary, and boy do they know how to throw a party! The staff did a funny dance for the kids along with Principal, Brett Loring, having a "Sit on it" balloon contest with the kids. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful school system in Calaveras County.
