Calaveras County Eases Possible Election Security Concerns |

San Andreas, CA...Concerns are rising about electronic voting systems changing votes or the potential for hackers manipulating the votes. As the Registrar of Voters for Calaveras County the security of our Election is always my top priority. All votes in Calaveras are made on paper ballots. The ballots are then read by a scanner; either at your local polling place or at the Elections Office, but that is not where the vote counting ends. The day after the election we begin an audit often referred to as a canvass.

Mark Twain Health Care District Sponsors 4th Annual “Golden Health Awards" |

San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Health Care District (MTHCD) and Mark Twain Medical Center Foundation will host the fourth annual “Golden Health Awards" at Mark Twain Medical Center on February 8, 2017. The Golden Health Award was established in 2013 to recognize and award selected health care organizations and individuals who have made a positive impact to the health and wellness of the Calaveras County community. Health care professionals selected for nomination are chosen from Community Health Based 501 (c)(3 Organizations, Public Health Programs, and Behavioral Health Programs that operate in Calaveras County. Agencies or Organizations that operate in multiple counties are eligible for nomination, however funds received as an award or grant must be used in Calaveras County to promote the health and wellness of the community.

Charter Bus & Semi Collision Result In Mass Fatalities |

Desert Hot Springs, CA...On October 23, 2016 at approximately 5:17 A.M., a collision between a charter bus and a semi-truck resulted in 13 fatalities and 31 additional injuries. The collision occurred on westbound Interstate 10 west of Indian Canyon Road in Desert Hot Springs, CA. A semi-truck with trailer was traveling at approximately five mph due to slow traffic when the charter bus collided with the trailer from behind. The Charter bus company is USA Holiday based in Los Angeles.

Yosemite Prescribed Burn Continues |

Yosemite National Park, CA...Ignitions of the Mariposa Grove prescribed fire continued this past weekend with an additional 36 acres completed in the upper grove. The project consists of 137 total acres, of which 75 acres have been completed over the last couple weeks. Fire personnel will continue to monitor and patrol the grove area. The Grove is currently closed to the public because of a major restoration project; burning at this time minimizes impacts to public use.

Stockton, CA...Monsignor Edward Donohoe passed away peacefully at the age of 91 in Stockton, California, October 20, 2016, Monsignor Edward Donohoe. The son of the late Michael and Ellen Donohoe, he was born in Gortermone, Carrigallen, County Leitrim, Ireland on February 20, 1925. He graduated from St. John’s College in Waterford in 1944 and was ordained to the priesthood June 18, 1950 for the Diocese of Sacramento, CA where he served as Associate Pastor of St. Patrick’s Church, Sonora, 1950 to 1953; St. Bernard’s Church, Eureka, 1953 to 1957; St. Patrick’s Church, Angels Camp, 1957 to 1962. Incardinated into the newly formed Diocese of Stockton in 1962, he served as Pastor of St. Patrick’s Church, Angels Camp, 1962 to 1980; St. Patrick’s Church, Sonora, 1980 to 1981; St. Andrew’s Church, San Andreas, 1981 to 1984; St. Michael’s Church, Stockton, 1984 to 1995; Pastor Emeritus, St. Michael’s Church, Stockton, 1995 to 2016.

Knights Ferry, CA...On Your Mark Events presents its 20th Annual Salmon Duathlon and 5K Run on Saturday, November 5, 8:45 a.m., in the historic hamlet (and it’s surroundings) of Knights Ferry, California. The Salmon Duathlon (run, bike, run) and 5K Run (two separate competitions) will benefit the preservation of the salmon natural spawning habitat in the Stanislaus River.
