My typical relaxing Saturday was recently given an all too familiar jolt when the calm of my early morning was broken by the thunder of airplanes and helicopters flying closely overhead. Stepping outside I looked up to see exactly what I didn't want to, a CDF Tactical plane, Tanker and Helicopter - and they were close, seemingly circling directly over head. Scanning the horizon, I found that the fire was very close, only about a 1/4 mile from my home.....

San Andreas, CA...The seventh annual César E. Chávez Children’s Book Drive at the San Andreas CHP was a great success for Calaveras County, collecting over 160 books. The book drive ran from Monday, March 31, Chávez’s Birthday, to May 5, 2008. Children from across the state will receive books collected during the campaign, which is co-sponsored by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) and the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.....

Copperopolis, CA....A large crowd showed up this morning for the Ribbon Cuttings of several new businesses that are officially opening their doors today in the new Copperopolis Town Square. Supervisor Russ Thomas started things off with a great rendition of America The Beautiful and Castle & Cook's Dave Haley introduced the business owners and laid out plans for the new center. They include a specialty grocery store, wine tasting, several restaurants, a coffee and wine bar that will open soon, a Shell gas station & car wash, MTSJ is opening a complete 14,000 sq ft. medical clinic, Two Hotels and many more specialty retail...

There Was A Whole Lot of Frog Kissing Going on Last Night!....With Video~By John Hamilton

Angels Camp, CA....Wednesday eve the newly refurbished Frogeteria at Frogtown was filled for the Annual Media Night as a start to the 80th Annual Calaveras County Fair and Frog Jumping Jubilee. Ray Malerbi, Laurie Giannini, their staff and boards threw quite a bash. The evening is an annual event where they honor their sponsors and community members. It is also the big night where the Saddle and Miss Calaveras contestants are introduced. The highlight of every media event is of course "Frog Kissing." One of the prices of that has to be paid to enter one of the pageants is the obligatory kissing of the frogs. Some of the girls seemed to revel in the amphibian smooching while others had to just try and get through it...

Angels Camp, CA....Last night's Media Night was hopping! Ray Malerbi and Laurie Giannini along with the Fair Board did an excellent job with their presentation and preview of this year's festivities. They put on a wonderful slide retrospective and also preview of this years events. Both the Miss Calaveras and Saddle Queen contestants introduced themselves as did the Junior Fair Board. In a previous post we enclosed the Frog Kissing Video. In this post we have the entire evening. It runs just over an hour and starts right as they started the video portion of the program. Enjoy...

CAL FIRE Prepares To Keep the Public Safe During Fire Season and Year Round

San Andreas, CA.....With rising temperatures, rapidly drying vegetation, and the onset of summer weather patterns, CAL FIRE’s Tuolumne Calaveras Unit (TCU) is preparing for an early start to the 2008 fire season. 74 seasonal firefighters were hired on April 28, 2008 and are completing training this week. This early hiring of seasonal staff is in addition to the 12 seasonal firefighters currently employed in TCU. Starting Monday May 5, these firefighters will staff the Unit’s 15 stations 24 hours per day. In addition to fire engines, 1....
