Health Department Measles Update |

San Andreas, CA...Calaveras County Health Services is continuing to monitor a significant measles outbreak occurring throughout California and several neighboring states. Many of those confirmed to have measles have been linked to visiting Disneyland or Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim during late December and early January. To date no Calaveras County residents have been reported to have confirmed or suspected measles infection. “Measles is a highly infectious, airborne disease that typically begins with fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes, and within a few days a red rash appears, usually first on the face and then spreading downward to the rest of the body” said Dean Kelaita, MD, Calaveras County Health Officer. “Vaccination is the most effective strategy to prevent measles.”...

Angels Camp, CA...Last Wednesday evening the Bret Harte Multi-Purpose room was filled with a good sized crowd engaging in community participaton on the future of traffic in the Angels Camp area. The group answered a complete battery of questions about what was important to them. This was the first of three meetings planned for the study. At this fundraising event for Foothill Conservancy, acclaimed actor Lee Stetson will be performing as the famous naturalist John Muir. Stetson is considered an expert on Muir, and has portrayed the historical figure in countless venues around the country. Stetson also portrayed Muir in Ken Burn’s award-winning series National Parks – America’s Best Idea....

| San Andreas, CA...Mark Anthony Barr died Wednesday, January 21, 2015, in Sacramento, CA at the age of 54. He was born July 30, 1960, in San Andreas and graduated from Calaveras High School in 1978. After high school he attended college at Biola University. He later transferred to U.C. Fullerton where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Mark came back to Calaveras and worked as a Social Worker. Mark eventually moved to Sacramento where he worked as a counselor at a boy’s home for many years. |

Calaveras County, CA...Dear Editor, I was very pleased to see the refinished billboard for Marine Lance Cpl Gavin R. Brummund. I had attempted to contact the wonderful gentleman who put it up. I wanted to do a fundraiser for a new one. Every time I drove by the faded one,it made me sad. I would still like to contribute towards the new one. As a Gold Star family, anything we can do to honor our service men and women, who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation, we support. Thank you to the gentleman who did this. Now I smile and salute him every time I drive by.
