RENAME JULY 4th ~ Letter to the Editor by Robert G. Reagan

Posted by: thepinetree on 07/05/2020 11:41 AM
Murphys, CA...They should rename July 4th and call it Interdependence Day because too many people think they can do whatever they want on Independence Day with little regard for the health of their families and fellow citizens. On this July 4th a group of flag waving “patriots” marched down Main St. in Murphys, with not a face mask in sight.

Breaking News....80% of us Agree on 80% of the Issues, 80% of the Time. ~ John Hamilton

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/23/2020 10:35 AM
Arnold, CA...Most of you are familiar with the 80/20 rule in economics espoused by Vilfredo Pareto. What is profound is that in the decades since his death it has been found that the 80/20 rule to be accurate in almost all areas. Take any subject even the taboo ones such as abortion, race & social issues it is an almost statistical certainty that 80% of us will agree on what good policy looks like.

Could Social Media Destroy the World? ~ John Hamilton

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/11/2020 12:21 PM
Arnold, CA...I have had a gnawing fear the last year that social media with all its benefits of instant gratification and at least the appearance of connectedness has a potentially catastrophic flaw. It has the ability to inspire mob like behavior almost instantly. Everything looks simple in a gif or a meme. Snippets of entire speeches or events can be made to confirm bias left or right. In our algorithm driven world each of our biases are fed with an ever increasing stream of bias confirming content. This works fine for shopping for a new TV. It is fatal for societies.

Can Small Towns & Communities Save America? ~ John Hamilton

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/31/2020 06:31 PM
Arnold, CA...We have been covering our little corners of small town America for over 15 years now. Over the last few years we have had the growing conviction like many of you that our society is in need. Our bonds as communities and countrymen are fraying and breaking.

Is Robbing Peter to Pay Paul Moral or Ethical? ~ Al Segalla

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/20/2020 10:26 AM
Copperopolis, CA...Governor Gavin Newsom recently said, at the time of reporting on his budget shortfall, that the Federal Government has a moral and ethical obligation to give money to California to make up the state shortfall.

Quarantine and a Free Society By Congressman Tom McClintock

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/28/2020 11:49 PM
Roseville, CA...Quarantine is the forced confinement of a person who has contracted or been exposed to an infectious disease.  Although it is a long-standing police power of governments, it is seldom used because seldom needed – sick people generally stay home on their own.  When it must be used, it is subject to due process: the right to contest the order in court, to present evidence that the order is invalid, and to have it vacated.

Could Increased Focus on Hygiene and Disease Actually Lower Total Illness Deaths This Year?

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/02/2020 08:08 AM
Arnold, CA...A bit of counter intuitive thinking for a Monday. While Covid 19 is real and is and will cause a significant number of deaths for us domestically as in other areas of the world. Our hunch is there may be a silver lining in that increased focus on disease transmission and self quarantining while sick could actually lower total flu, Covid 19 & other infectious disease deaths in 2020.

Proposition 13 Has Helped Generations of Property Owners ~ Al Segala

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/07/2020 04:17 PM
Copperopolis, CA...For over 40 years Prop. 13 has provided certainty to property owners. It protects homeowners, renters, small businesses and more from sudden tax increases we can’t afford. That same tax certainty provided by Prop. 13 has benefited our government as well by providing a stable and reliable stream of revenue. Now, measures are headed to the ballot to dismantle these protections. One has already qualified (2020, Prop 13) and another is in the signature gathering stage. The impact of this tax increase, if it passes, would amount to higher costs for consumer goods such as food and fuel, we all use every day, The split-roll measures are misleading. Supporters don’t want you to know that about $1 billion in administrative costs and payments to the state are paid out first and then whatever is left gets split with 60% going to unspecified local government services and lastly, only about 40% goes to schools with no guarantee that the money makes it to the classroom.

Three Words Sum Up the Soon End of PG&E, Technological Determinism & Goodwill ~ by John Hamilton

Posted by: thepinetree on 10/30/2019 12:17 AM
Arnold, CA....Over the last few days one question has consumed us during the PSPS Outages & Kincade Fire debacles. Can PG&E survive this? No matter how we did our calculations financial, marketplace and political the answer was always no. We believe the highest revenue point PG&E will ever have was this past summer and over the next year of so they could and probably will lose a significant portion of their revenue.

Cannabis Logic, Cannabis Black Market & Reasonable Rules ~ Al Segalla

Posted by: thepinetree on 10/22/2019 11:30 AM
Copperopolis, CA...I attended the recent Board of Supervisor meetings concerning commercial cannabis regulation. It was a hate fest with little good will and logic. Some thoughts: The problems with criminal activity relate to the black market grows, not the permitted ones. This was confirmed by the Sheriff and Ag Commissioner.
