TRAIN WRECK, A Calaveras County Resident Warns of the Coming Disaster by David Vassar |

Arnold, CA...For the past few weeks Calaveras County has felt like a slow moving train wreck. There is a tremendous amount of noise in any train wreck, but in this case no one is listening. And no one seems to notice that the train wreck is actually the future of Calaveras County. The train left the station in May of 2016 when the Calaveras Board of Supervisors passed an “Urgency Ordinance” with a vote of 4 to 1. The ordinance prescribed rules and regulations for the legal cultivation of cannabis in Calaveras County.

Copperopolis, CA...Regarding the threatened teachers strike. Sometimes we forget that threatening harm, such as a strike, is a form of extortion which is defined as: "The obtaining of property from another induced by wrongful use of actual or threatened force, violence, or fear, or under color of official right." In this case, the victim seems to be the taxpayer. How many parents would want their children taught by a teacher who condoned extortion?

San Andreas, CA...Both Sides of the Argument: I have been listening to the arguments made by the people supporting commercial marijuana industry and to those opposed in Calaveras County. Those in favor of commercial marijuana cultivation argue that the ban will fail because there is no money to fund a ban, and the industry should be regulated. Only the good, responsible growers will be here and the county’s financial woes would be alleviated because somewhere between 5-11 million dollars that will come in from permit fees and taxes. That money will be used to ‘regulate’ the growing industry and protect us from unregulated black market growers. And there is the argument that marijuana has always been here.

Pyongyang, North Korea....Now that North Korea has successfully tested a Hydrogen Bomb is it time to draw a meaningful "Red Line" around the entire country? With shooting a missile over Japan last week and with this week's H-Bomb test the window for the international community to act short of military options may be closing. Since they have shown they have no interest in being part of a peaceful community of nations how about how about this as a framework for a UN Resolution?

San Andreas, CA...Dear Calaveras, I am publishing this letter after doing much research and inquiry into the pros and cons of the current proposed ban ordinance. This topic is extremely polarizing. On one end of the pole you have the “banners”, people who just don't like it. On the other end you have the growers, legal and illegal, advocating for their right to cultivate. It’s controversial to say you support regulation because then you give the impression that you are a marijuana advocate. The fact is, you can be anti-marijuana and support regulation.

Angels Camp, CA...On Sunday, August 12 a grass fire broke out in a vacant lot near our home in old town Angels Camp, above Utica Park. As fire newbies, we were pretty scared. The flames were over six feet high and the crackling could be heard inside our house even though all the windows were closed. Our local firefighters were there on the spot, and prevented any damage to the homes nearby. Thank you all for your quick work and professionalism—we’re lucky to have you! ~Bob

Washington, DC...For all people of good will — regardless of party affiliation, race, creed, or color — the events that took place this weekend in Charlottesville were sickening and deeply disturbing. Several clear themes emerged for me this weekend. And while they are pretty obvious, I thought I would share them with the broader ACLU community, in an effort to give voice to what many of us are feeling and to spark a further discussion that will allow us to move together with greater hope and resolve through what are likely to be troubling days ahead.

Murphys, CA...On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Murphys Old Timers Museum, I would like to thank everyone who supported “The Concert of the Summer” held at Brice Station on July 16th. The event was a huge success with all proceeds going directly to our community museum. I especially want to thank our sponsors the Mast and Quyle families for sharing their beautiful venue and staff along with the many individuals and businesses who sold concert tickets including Sustenance Books and Next! Upscale Resale. Appreciation also goes to the Rugo family who donated their own ranch-raised beef, Clamper Floyd Berry who handled the grill and our incredible volunteers who planned and organized everything from the menu to the silent auction to clean up.

Valley Springs, CA...If the Board of Supervisors desires, ultimately, not to make the final decision on whether marijuana activities should be allowed in Calaveras County, or at what level, but instead to let the voters decide, then they should consider the following: Having made my living as a trial consultant for nearly 30 years, which includes the science of public opinion research via long-established polling methods, it is important for the results of the polling to be unambiguous. To achieve that result, the question must be unambiguous and it’s best if they require bi-polar responses, responses that are opposite one another, a “yes/no” response, for example. Better yet is if there are two questions, each requiring a bi-polar response and each being polar opposites of each other.
