Posted by: thepinetree on 05/14/2014 11:18 AM
Sacramento, CA...Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. released a revised state budget that provides health care to millions more Californians, pays down $11 billion in debt and fully funds the teachers' retirement system over time. "This May Revision is good news for California," said Governor Brown. "It shows that California can afford to provide health care to many more people, while at the same time paying its debts and shoring up the long-troubled teachers' retirement system."

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/13/2014 06:09 PM
Sacramento, CA...California Fair Share today expressed disappointment with Gov. Brown’s decision to include no new funding for early childhood education in his revised budget proposal and pledged to keep organizing educators, parents and others until he changes his mind. “Everyone in California should get a fair shot in life and it starts with a quality education,” said Jason Pfeifle, State Director for California Fair Share. “States from Oklahoma to Massachusetts are crossing ideological boundaries to embrace high-quality, affordable, early childhood education programs and California should follow.”...

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/12/2014 09:07 AM
Murphys, CA...Feeney Park, the heavily used recreation area adjacent to Albert Michelson Elementary School in Murphys, has a new entrance sign thanks to a gift from Nellie Redpath, Wrangler Barnum, and Becky Reagan and their human companions. (The three canines can be seen most mornings chasing balls and frolicking with each other in the park.)

Complete Government Center Frog Jump Results

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/11/2014 10:46 AM
San Andreas, CA...We had already posted that Marcia Thompson & "Morph" had taken the top stop but we thought we would pass along some random video clips and over 140 photos of the event. Jockeying our local mascots seems easy enough until you try it. On Tuesday it seemed to take a woman's coaxing to get our green friends to leap. Some of the biggest guys in the crowd from the public works department barely got them to budge. There was one petite female whom shall remain nameless who not only scared her frog into movement but scared many in attendance as well. One has to assume from the harmless looking packaging on the outside that her bark must be worse than her bite.....

Beyond Shovel-Ready: The Extent and Impact of U.S. Infrastructure Jobs

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/10/2014 01:59 PM
Washington, DC...The workforce responsible for supporting the nation’s infrastructure, including transportation, water and energy systems, is far larger than currently thought, according to a report released today by the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. One in every ten Americans, or 11 percent of the national workforce, holds an infrastructure job, and these jobs stretch across 95 occupations and 42 industries. Beyond Shovel-Ready: The Extent of Infrastructure Jobs in the U.S. is the first study of its kind to measure the full breadth of infrastructure employment in the United States. Based on 2012 employment data, the report brings to light the fact that infrastructure jobs play a distinct role not only in the construction of the nation’s infrastructure assets but also in their design, operation and governance...

Cost-Saving Elections Bill First Defeated, Then Passed

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/09/2014 07:00 PM
Sacramento, CA...On Tuesday, a bill which would have allowed counties to decide how to conduct special elections for Congress and the Legislature failed passage in the Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee. Assembly Bill 1873 (Gonzalez/Mullin) would have allowed an election to occur by absentee/mail-in-balloting if a county so desired. A number of requirements were placed into the bill to allow for a limited form of in-person voting. RCRC strongly supported this measure (and similar past legislation) as it would have saved counties money due to the requirement of poll workers and other in-person materials needed for voting...
