Unemployment Holds Steady at 10% Nationally

Washington, DC...Nonfarm payroll employment edged down (-85,000) in December, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 10.0 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment fell in construction, manufacturing, and wholesale trade, while temporary help services and health care added jobs....

Each year, the Chamber recognizes an outstanding business at the Chamber’s Annual Installation Dinner. Chamber members nominate businesses for consideration. A committee of Chamber Directors review each of the nominations according to the criteria established for the Business of the Year. The criteria for judging is: Community Involvement, Chamber Involvement, Business Successes, Charitable Involvement and the general business background. San Andreas, CA...The Calaveras County Board will be busy tomorrow for their first meeting of the new year. A new Board Chair will be chosen and it is expected to be District 3, Supervisor Merita Callaway. They will also parcel out the many committee assignments that the various Board Members have. They will also be appointing a new Chief Probation Officer for the county to replace the retired and beloved Mike Kriletich. The mentors will no doubt be out in force as the Calaveras Board will be proclaiming January as Mentoring Month and January 21st as Mentoring Day. The Board will be rounding out the meeting with a study session on the United States Forest Service Travel Management Plan. Bear Valley, CA...NASCAR starts off it's season with Daytona it's biggest race of the year. If you win in Daytona then even if the rest of the year is subpar it still is counted as a winning year. Much is the same for the wintersports industry. Bear Valley Marketing Director Rosie Sundell said that the Christmas - New Year holiday period can amount to over 50% of a resorts sales for the year. During the 09-10 holiday break our local resort is well ahead of last year...
