Gasoline Excise Tax to Increase 3.5 Cents on July 1, 2013

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/27/2013 04:00 PM
Sacramento – July 1, 2013, the excise tax on gasoline will increase 3.5 cents per gallon, from a rate of 36 cents to 39.5 cents per gallon. Assembly Bill x8 6, Ch. 11, and Senate Bill 70, Ch. 9, which became law in 2010, lowered the sales and use tax rate on gasoline and increased the excise tax rate on July 1, 2010. The laws require the annual sales and excise taxes paid on gasoline to remain revenue neutral, assuring the tax burden on consumers is the same. These laws also mandate that the California State Board of Equalization (BOE) adjust the excise tax rate by March 1 of each year in order to ensure revenue neutrality....

The 2013 CCWD Rate Road Show. Copper Last Night...Rancho Tonight

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/26/2013 11:03 AM
Copperopolis, CA...The CCWD Rate Increase Road Show rolled into Copperopolis last night. It was another contentious meeting with the Rock Creek Park Community Room filled with ratepayers and citizens concerned with the proposed rate increases from the district. Even though the mood in the room was anything but sanguine it was however calmer than the donnybrook that was the Arnold town hall. The race will probably go down to the wire to see if the ratepayer groups can get enough votes to stop the increases from going into place....

Above are some photos from last night. We didn't get the chance to record last night's meeting but the CCWD presentation was materially the same as the one in White Pines. So if you have not had the opportunity to review their case for a rate increase video of the White Pines Meeting is below...

Water Rates and Seed Corn ~ Letter To The Editor by Al Segalla

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/23/2013 10:13 PM
Copperopolis, CA...In the olden days, a farmer growing corn would save a portion of the harvest as seed corn to plant next year. He didn’t have to do this; he could eat the seed corn. But, if he ate the seed corn, there would be no crop next year and the family would suffer.

Kansas group helps keep young people in rural towns

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/17/2013 06:03 PM
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. — Young people have been leaving rural America for decades, but Mike Bosch, 34, is happy to swim against the tide. Instead of moving his fast-growing information technology services company to his hometown of Dallas last year, Bosch chose to stay in Baldwin City, Kan., population 4,515. The business, Reflective Group, sits between a car repair shop and post office on a quiet cobblestone street. All but two of the company's 17 employees are under 40

Reuters: Kevin Murphy. Young people in rural towns: Mike Bosch, part of a 'rural by choice' movement, is pictured in Baldwin City, Kan., where he kept his technology business instead of moving it to Dallas. With technology, companies can operate online from small towns, which offer lower costs and dedicated workers.
