Angels Camp, CA....Meet Art and Karen Kaua of Aloha Boarding. What do you get when you combine a Hawaiian who, as a boy, had 27 poi dogs ("not one purebred") and a small-town girl who read story books to her pony? Art and Karen Kaua, the creators of Aloha Boarding and Training! In 1993, an idea evolved from Art's experience as a ranch foreman, Karen's decade of dog grooming, and our parents' dog show experience with a Lakeland Terrier Champion, Mr. Duffy of Murphys....

Sacramento, CA...The Bureau of Reclamation today announced the initial 2014 water supply allocation for Central Valley Project agricultural contractors, municipal and industrial contractors and federal refuges. The California Department of Water Resources reports that snowpack and precipitation in the Sierra Nevada are historically low and the snow-water content statewide stands at 29 percent of average for this time of year. Water Crisis Results From Years Of Inaction Says Farm Bureau

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/21/2014 04:10 PM
Sacramento, CA....Today’s announcement by the federal Central Valley Project that it will deliver no water to most of its farm customers highlights the lack of investment California has made in new water supplies, according to the president of the California Farm Bureau Federation. CFBF President Paul Wenger said the state has failed to insulate itself from the effects of drought. “As the saying goes, you reap what you sow, and our state and federal governments have failed miserably at providing the resources and infrastructure to adapt to changing climatic conditions,” Wenger said...

New CalPERS Costs To Be Borne By Local Governments

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/21/2014 05:25 PM
Sacramento, CA...Earlier this week, the Board of Directors of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) adopted new actuarial assumptions. These assumptions stem from recent staff reviews of the overall system and needs associated with providing benefits to its members. The adoption of these new assumptions will result in employer (local government members and the State of California) contribution rates increasing. The CalPERS Board of Directors also decided to implement a payment scheme to meet these obligations. Local governments will utilize the “20-5” option whereby the increased costs to local governments will be paid over 20 years with a five year ramp-up and a five year ramp-down. Two alternative options for local governments were considered – a “20-7” scheme or a “30-5” scheme – but neither of these options was adopted. In adopting the 20-5 scheme, payments by local government members will commence in the 2016-17 Fiscal Year. It should be noted that local governments do have the option to pay these new liabilities in advance to minimize finance costs....

Angels Camp, CA...The mountains east of Bakersfield aren’t the first place you might expect to find shark’s teeth, but that’s just what Russ Shoemaker did. In fact, he and his wife Pam have found hundreds of teeth and other fossils buried in the ancient soils on their property in Kern county. From that fortuitous discovery in the southern Sierra Nevada mountains many years ago, the Shoemakers have spent a lifetime exploring the planet and collecting a mind boggling array of geological and biological wonders – many of which are on display and for sale at Stories in Stones in downtown Angels Camp. Their business is also the recipient of the 2013 Innovations in Tourism Award for an outstanding retail experience...
