2012 Frog Jump Champion Honored at Centennial

Angels Camp, CA...In 1928 Angels Camp paved the main street. To celebrate the occasion the citizens held a frog jump competition. This frog jump competition was modeled after the frog jump in the famous short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", written by Mark Twain. Twain spent a great deal of time in Angels Camp and first heard the jumping frog. There are currently 87 plaques including one commemorating Mark Twain's Dan'l Webster and his jockey Jim Smiley located in front of the Angels Hotel. Residents and visitors are encouraged to view the "Frog Hop of Fame" commemorating our historic and unique jumping frog jubilee frog story at the Angels Hotel that still stands today. The event became known as the Jumping Frog Jubilee...

Calaveras Sheriff’s Office’s Newest Employees

(San Andreas, CA) On 09/24/12 Sheriff Gary Kuntz swore in two of his office’s newest members, Calaveras Sheriff’s Emergency 911 Dispatcher Guadalupe Martinez and Calaveras Deputy Sheriff Robbie Sanchez. Dispatcher Guadalupe Martinez spent several years of volunteer time preparing herself for a career in Law Enforcement. While she was a teenager in high school she volunteered for the Explorer Cadet Program with the Lodi Police Department. After she graduated from high school, she volunteered for the San Joaquin Probation Department, where for 2 years she did clerical work and assisted with self-help groups for the youth...

NFL, Referees Reach Agreement; Refs Back on Field Thursday

The NFL and the NFL Referees Association agreed tonight to the terms of a new eight-year collective bargaining agreement that will return the game officials to the field for this weekend's games, beginning with Thursday night's Cleveland at Baltimore game. The agreement, the longest with the game officials in NFL history, was reached in New York between the negotiating teams for the NFL and the NFLRA with the assistance of Scot Beckenbaugh and Peter Donatello of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. The agreement must be ratified by the NFLRA membership. Under the commissioner's authority, Commissioner Goodell can enter into this agreement without a vote of the NFL clubs...

Brown Jr. today took a test ride in a “self-driving car” before signing into law new safety standards and regulations for autonomous vehicles. “Autonomous vehicles are another example of how California’s technological leadership is turning today’s science fiction into tomorrow’s reality,” said Governor Brown. “This law will allow California’s pioneering engineers to safely test and implement this amazing new technology.”

Gaines on Comcast’s Announcement to Move 1,000 Jobs Out of California

SACRAMENTO—Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, R-Rocklin, today responded to Comcast’s announcement to move three call-centers amounting to 1,000 jobs to Oregon, Washington, and Colorado. Andrew Johnson, regional vice president of Comcast California said the reason for moving from California was related to the high cost of doing business.
