CALAVERAS VISITORS BUREAU UPDATE

Hello CVB Members and Friends! Here’s a quick update on some of the things we’ve been up to...Calaveras Takes the Gold…Again! Hopefully by now you have heard that Calaveras County took the Gold again at the California State Fair! This year’s theme “Passport to Adventure” played out with a lifted yellow Jeep as the centerpiece of the display. Whimsically spilling out from the Jeep are several Calaveras Adventures. There is also a dedication to Mark Twain where fairgoers can read some of his original writings. We have about 100 volunteers from throughout the County who work the exhibit each day giving out tons of Calaveras literature. Comments so far indicate that attendance this year has surpassed previous years. We have already had visitors at the Visitors Center who came here because of the exhibit. Someone even called and ordered Calaveras t-shirts after seeing them as part of the display! The fair runs through August 1st....

With customers increasing appetite for mobile data applications such as: email, internet access and picture messaging, 3G Mobile Broadband provides a more robust data experience with higher data rates (speed) and the ability to transfer larger files, stream video and music. Angels Camp, CA...The signs are up and the lot has been flagged and according to workers on scene construction will start next week on the new McDonalds that is coming to The Frog Jump Plaza in Angels Camp. They hope to be finished with construction in October...

Hospital Announces Availability of Community Grant Funding

San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital, through its affiliation with Catholic Healthcare West, has announced the opening of the 2010 CHW Community Grants Program. The deadline for submission of Letters of Intent is August 23, 2010. The objective of CHW’s Community Grants Program is to award funding to nonprofit organizations whose proposals respond to the priorities identified in the community health assessment or the community benefit plans of Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital. The funds are to be used to provide services to underserved populations (economically poor; women and children; mentally or physically disabled; or other disenfranchised populations)...

Murphys, CA...Steve Fairchild will be the keynote speaker at the Calaveras County Taxpayers Association third annual fundraiser BBQ on Thursday, August 19th.  The event will be held at Moaning Cavern Park in Vallecito between 5 and 9 PM. Steve is President of Sierra Nevada Recreation Corporation, which develops and presents natural caverns, mines, and other activity attractions for curious people...

The Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) California State Council awarded the Black Oak Casino and Tuolumne Band of Me Wuk Indians, both of Tuolumne, CA, the coveted 2010 Business Supporter of the Year Award. The 2010 Central Sierra Economic Profile...Up Hospitality, Natural Resources, Information Services, Education & Health Services

Central Sierra, CA...The 2010 Central Sierra Economic Profile has been released. Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, Inyo, Mariposa, Mono and Tuolumne comprise this area. Total Nonfarm jobs grew by 24% from 1995-2008, but declined in 2009, resulting in net growth of 15.2% from 1995-2009. Nonfarm jobs declined by 4.4% from March 2008 to March 2009 and again by 0.2% from March 2009 to March 2010. The region’s population grew 4.5% while total employment (including Farm jobs) grew 5% and the average annual wage grew by 30% (2001-2008), although the population declined 0.5% from 2006-2008 and employment declined 1.5% from 2007-2008.

Calaveras Professional Association (CPA) will officially launch Wednesday, July 21, 2010 with a kick off meeting at the Angels Camp Mercantile and Café. The meeting will start at 7:00 A.M. and end at 8:30 A.M. The purpose of CPA is to grow businesses through education and referrals. Each week the group meets at the Angels Camp Mercantile and Café in downtown Angels Camp to get to know each other’s businesses and to learn how to give quality referrals to the members of the group.
