San Andreas, CA...During the last 3 years the Mark Twain Health Care District has worked continuously on behalf of all Calaveras County residents to develop the best solution to sustain and expand our only hospital and its many clinics. A major step forward was taken on January 24, 2018 when the Board unanimously approved a resolution supporting a new lease (Measure A) between Dignity Health and the Mark Twain Medical Center Corporation.

Reported Sexually Transmitted Diseases Increase in Calaveras County |

San Andreas, CA...A significant increase in Calaveras County residents diagnosed with a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) in 2017 was reported by the Calaveras County Public Health Division (CCPHD). According to local health authorities, cases of gonorrhea increased from 12 cases in 2016 to 21 cases in 2017, while cases of syphilis increased from 6 to 10 during the same time period. Similar increases in STD rates were seen statewide as well. According to a report released by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), more than 300,000 cases of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and early Syphilis were reported in 2017: a 45 percent increase compared to 5 years ago.

Weekend Sleep May Be Enough to Erase Workweek Sleep Deficit Says New Study |

Stockholm, Sweden.....Previous studies have found a U‐shaped relationship between mortality and (weekday) sleep duration. We here address the association of both weekday and weekend sleep duration with overall mortality. A cohort of 43,880 subjects was followed for 13 years through record‐linkages. Cox proportional hazards regression models with attained age as time‐scale were fitted to estimate multivariable‐adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for mortality; stratified analyses on age (<65 years, ≥65 years) were conducted. Among individuals <65 years old, short sleep (≤5 hr) during weekends at baseline was associated with a 52% higher mortality rate (hazard ratios 1.52; 95% confidence intervals 1.15–2.02) compared with the reference group (7 hr), while no association was observed for long (≥9 hr) weekend sleep.

Columbia, CA...Sierra Repertory Theatre has awarded the preview performance of its production of the hit Broadway musical “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast” to Mind Matters to be used as a major fundraiser. “We think this is a great way for people, young and old, to enjoy a wonderful evening in the theatre while helping Mind Matters to pursue its goal to help individuals and families cope with the consequences of autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and learning disabilities,” says Mona Kayton, the Mind Matters board member who is in charge of organizing the event.

San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Medical Center Foundation is seeking high energy volunteers to assist in the Hospital Gift Shop. Gift shop volunteers assist in daily operations, run the register, open and close, inventory, restocking and customer service. Volunteers must commit to a minimum of 4 hours per week.

San Andreas, CA....In 2003, I retired and became a volunteer at Mark Twain Medical Center. I have worked in several departments one or two days a week, six hours a day. On June 5, the voters of Calaveras County have a chance to help our hospital. Vote yes on Measure A. It’s a measure asking voters to approve a new lease between Mark Twain Medical Center and the Mark Twain Health Care District and renew the affiliation with Dignity Health. It does not raise taxes or have any impact on your tax bill. It does not give our hospital to Dignity Health.
