Dr. Smart of MTHD Speaks at Independence Hall on November 30th

Arnold, CA...On Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 6pm at Independence Hall in Arnold, Dr. Randall Smart, Executive Director of the Mark Twain Health Care District will address residents of Ebbetts Pass on the state of health care in Calaveras County. Dignity Health’s current contract with the district expires in 2019. The health care district will decide between three options which include remaining with Dignity Health or another affiliate, choosing to operate the hospital independently or with a management-of-services agreement. All voters are requested to attend, if possible, as the district’s decision becomes an election issue in 2018 for the Calaveras registrant.

Chaplain Dick Brown Is Tackling His Health – Family Heart Disease History Cannot be Ignored

Rancho Calaveras, CA...A family history of heart disease has made Dick Brown of Rancho Calaveras pay more attention to his health than most men. He says, “If I had ignored it, I would be dead by now.” His father passed away at the age of 57 after a lifetime of cardiac issues, including four heart attacks. Dick sadly notes that his older brother did not take the family history seriously and passed away three years ago.

Sonora, CA...Adventist Health Sonora, along with partners throughout Tuolumne County, participated in the 2017 California Statewide Medical and Health Exercise (SWMHE) on Thursday, November 16 at Adventist Health Sonora’s main campus. This full scale exercise was based on a hospital campus active shooter scenario helped our community to be better prepared for emergencies and incidents of all types and sizes.

San Andreas, CA...Dignity Health announced that Bob Diehl, President and CEO of Mark Twain Medical Center, has been named to the California Hospital Association’s Rural Healthcare Center Advisory Board. Diehl’s three-year term begins Jan. 1, 2018. “I’m excited to join an advisory board that is committed to meeting the healthcare needs of patients in rural communities,” said Diehl. “In today’s challenging and ever-changing health care environment, I look forward to advancing successful best-practices of California’s rural hospitals. I’m honored.”

NIH Blood Pressure Study Supports 130/80 as New AHA/ACC Hypertension Threshold

Washington, DC...Findings from a landmark study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) support a key component of the new 2017 Hypertension Clinical Practice Guidelines announced by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) at the annual AHA meeting in Anaheim, California. In 2013, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), part of the NIH, adapted to changing times and refined its focus to generating high quality scientific evidence in support of the development of clinical practice guidelines worthy of the public trust. The new high blood pressure guidelines illustrate the utility and impact of NHLBI scientific studies.

Copperopolis, CA...West Nile Virus has been detected in the Copperopolis area of Calaveras County. On 10/4/12 Calaveras County Public Health Division received confirmation of the first detection of West Nile Virus for 2017 in a chicken from Copperopolis.

Sonora, CA...Adventist Health Sonora, along with partners throughout Tuolumne County, is participating in the 2017 California Statewide Medical and Health Exercise (SWMHE) on Thursday, November 16 at Adventist Health Sonora’s main campus beginning at 7:30 a.m. This full scale exercise is based on a hospital campus active shooter scenario and will help our community to be better prepared for emergencies and incidents of all types and sizes. This is a DRILL and not an actual event. This exercise will include participants from: Adventist Health Sonora. Cal Fire, California Highway Patrol, Sonora Fire Department, Sonora Police Department, Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, Tuolumne County Ambulance, Tuolumne County Office of Emergency Services, Tuolumne County Public Health Tuolumne County Sheriff.

Mark is sharing his personal experience as a spokesperson for the local “Tackle Your Health” awareness campaign during Men’s Health Month in November. This public education effort is co-sponsored by Mark Twain Medical Center and the Mark Twain Health Care District.
