Boston, MA....This is the best visualization of the progression of antibiotic-resistant bacteria we have ever seen. The following is from the Harvard Medical School that should have all of us cutting back on the antibiotics. "In a creative stroke inspired by Hollywood wizardry, scientists from Harvard Medical School and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology have designed a simple way to observe how bacteria move as they become impervious to drugs. The experiments, described in the Sept. 9 issue of Science, are thought to provide the first large-scale glimpse of the maneuvers of bacteria as they encounter increasingly higher doses of antibiotics and adapt to survive—and thrive—in them.

Murphys, CA...Doris Murphy Barger passed away peacefully on August 19, 2016 at the age of 93. She departed this world in the manner she lived her life – with strength, grace and dignity. She was a remarkable woman who lived a wonderful life. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by her two sons Walter (Gretchen) and Stephen (Mary);, her four grandchildren Kimberly Durand (Mike), Krissy Clark (Doug), Sarah Ranney (Mike) and Benjamin Barger; and four great-grandchildren. Her beloved husband Richard preceded her in death. They met at age 9 as both families had summer cabins on the American River. Dick would rent Doris’ horse and they fell in love ten years later while both were at Stanford University.

CDPH Reports Two Cases of Zika-Related Birth Defects in California

Sacramento, CA...The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) reported wednesday that two infants with Zika-related microcephaly have been born in California to women who had Zika virus infections during pregnancy after spending time in a country where the virus is endemic. While mosquitoes that can carry the virus have been found in 12 California counties, there is no evidence these mosquitoes are transmitting Zika in the state at this time.

San Andreas, CA...The biggest item on yesterday's Mark Twain Health Care District Board meeting was pushed back until the August 24th meeting. There may need to be some state specific contract adjustments. The agenda item was: "Consider approval of an agreement with Quorum Health Resources LLC for a financial, operational and strategic assessment of hospital operations to determine the District’s ability to sustain itself as an independent hospital and identify alternatives if independence is not an option"

Miami, FL...The Florida Department of Health has identified an area in one neighborhood of Miami where Zika is being spread by mosquitoes. This guidance is for people who live in or traveled to this area any time after June 15 (based on the earliest time symptoms can start and the maximum 2-week incubation period for Zika virus).
