Local Measles Exposure: Public Health Seeks the Public’s Assistance

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/29/2016 10:08 PM
Sutter Creek, CA – Amador County Public Health is conducting an investigation of an unvaccinated visitor who tested positive for measles. This individual is not a resident of Amador County, but dined at a local restaurant while traveling through the area. There are currently no cases in Amador County. As part of this ongoing investigation, Amador County Public Health is asking anyone who was inside Strings Italian Café in Jackson on the evening of Wednesday, 3/23/2016, to call the Health Department at (209) 223-6407. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is easily spread through the air by coughing, sneezing or close contact with an infected person. “Measles is not a food-borne illness,” states Dr. Rita Kerr, Amador County Health Officer. “The owners and management of Strings Italian Cafe are fully cooperating with the investigation.”

Modified Maggots Could Help Human Wound Healing

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/27/2016 09:18 PM
Raleigh, NC...In a proof-of-concept study, NC State University researchers show that genetically engineered green bottle fly (Lucilia sericata) larvae can produce and secrete a human growth factor – a molecule that helps promote cell growth and wound healing. Sterile, lab-raised green bottle fly larvae are used for maggot debridement therapy (MDT), in which maggots are applied to non-healing wounds, especially diabetic foot ulcers, to promote healing. Maggots clean the wound, remove dead tissue and secrete anti-microbial factors. The treatment is cost-effective and approved by the Food and Drug Administration. However, there is no evidence from randomized clinical trials that MDT shortens wound healing times.

Sleep Training: An Absolute MUST For Me

Posted by: thepinetree on 03/01/2016 01:41 PM
Murphys, CA...I often hear from parents that they aren’t “into” sleep training their children.  I am a pediatric sleep consultant and to be perfectly honest, I’m not so much into sleep training either.  It’s not the sleep training that I enjoy, it’s the end result which is a well-rested, happier, healthier family!  We are a nation of chronically sleep deprived people that continue to miss our sleep cues daily.  Our children are simply not getting the rest they need at night and it is an epidemic that needs to be seriously addressed.  I know when I’m up multiple times a night for any reason, I feel terrible the next day.  Why is it any different for a baby or child?  Just because they can’t express themselves in the same way we can, they feel terrible!  Exhaustion in little ones often manifests itself as hyperactivity and unfortunately, is not attributed to sleep deprivation.  Humans are designed to get consolidated sleep at night and need it in order to feel well rested during the day.  Fragmented sleep doesn’t allow for proper brain development and has been linked to childhood obesity, hyper activity, and an increased risk for diabetes in children.

Dog Catches Rabies From A Skunk Encounter In Amador

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/22/2016 01:02 PM
Sutter Creek, CA – Amador County Public Health and Animal Control Departments remind residents that rabies in wildlife continues to pose a risk to pets and people. Multiple wildlife have tested positive for rabies in 2016. In February 2016, a dog tested positive for rabies after contact with a skunk. The dog did not have current vaccination to provide protection from the rabies virus. Due to contact with this animal, multiple people are being treated with post-exposure prophylaxis as a preventative measure. These individuals have NOT tested positive for rabies.

Mark Twain Medical Center and Soroptimists KICK OFF American Heart Month by offering FREE CHOLESTEROL TESTS DURING FEBRUARY

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/08/2016 11:22 AM
San Andreas, CA...As part of a continuing partnership with Soroptimist International of Calaveras County, Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) will be offering FREE cholesterol tests for women in Calaveras County during American Heart Month in February. "Many people who are at risk for a heart attack and stroke don't know it,” stated MTMC Cardiologist Courtney Virgilio. “The good news is that many of the risk factors for cardiovascular disease are preventable and/or treatable. Health screenings are one way to get ahead of potential cardiovascular issues. It is important to review these results with your doctor so that you can come up with a plan together to keep you doing well.” Last year over 500 Calaveras County women benefitted from our FREE Cholesterol screenings.
