CAL FIRE Cares Enough to Wear Pink |

Sacramento, CA..Like millions of Americans, firefighters and their families are affected by cancer every year. For the next week, CAL FIRE is joining fire and police departments across the nation to show their support for the battle against cancer by wearing special CAL FIRE shirts with pink ribbons on them. Raising awareness and money for cancer research, CAL FIRE’s 2013 “Cares Enough to Wear Pink" campaign runs October 20 - 26 and is part of October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when wearing pink signifies support for breast cancer research.

FDA Wants to Know Why Are Jerky Treats Making Pets Sick? |

Washington, DC...If you have a dog or cat that became ill after eating jerky pet treats, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) would like to hear from you or your veterinarian. The agency has repeatedly issued alerts to consumers about reports it has received concerning jerky pet treat-related illnesses involving 3,600 dogs and 10 cats in the U.S. since 2007. Approximately 580 of those pets have died...

Sonora, CA...Hospice of the Sierra will be hosting Coping with the Holidays, a seminar and support group for anyone who has lost a loved one and would like to learn and share ways of coping with the upcoming holiday season. The seminar will be held Saturday, November 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Conference Room 1 at Sonora Regional Medical Center. There is no charge for this event but pre-registration is requested. Sacramento, CA....Volunteers and staff of the Red Cross Capital Region will Drop, Cover, and Hold On this morning as they participate in the annual Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill – an exercise which has grown to the world’s largest of its kind since its inception in 2008. Capital Region staff join over 9.5 million Californians and over 24 million worldwide registered to participate in this year’s ShakeOut, an exercise which is designed to raise awareness of earthquake risks and increase overall earthquake preparedness....

Sonora, CA...Jon Cavaiani (born August 2, 1943) is a retired United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military’s highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War. Sergeant Major Jon Cavaiani is fighting for his life. Jon has been diagnosed with MDS (myelodyplastic syndrome), a life threatening blood disorder. Over the last few months, Jon has received medical consultations, blood transfusions, and chemotherapy form San Francisco Veterans Hospital—Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Sonora Hospital. Currently, Jon is waiting for admission to Stanford for a bone marrow transplant and other critical treatments....
