Posted by: thepinetree on 01/28/2013 11:50 AM
San Andreas, CA...January 23, 2013– Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) has selected six Calaveras County nonprofit organizations to receive Dignity Health Community Grants for 2012. “Besides having the opportunity to listen to each of the recipients about their projects, this luncheon also provides us the opportunity to talk about our Community Benefit programs and celebrate their successes,” commented Larry Cornish, V.P. Chief Operating Officer, who serves on the Executive Leadership team that evaluated grants. “In 2012, over 52,000 persons benefited from our community programs. Highlights included a total community benefit expenditure of over $32 million. Quantifiable benefits included over $3M in benefit to our more vulnerable populations, $40,000 for the broader community, traditional charity care, unpaid costs of Medi-cal and Medicare, community service donations, community health services and education, and community building activities.”

Calaveras Residents Speak Out on Obesity Prevention

Posted by: thepinetree on 01/25/2013 05:27 PM
San Andreas, CA...The Calaveras County Public Health Department has announced the findings of a local survey on obesity and obesity prevention. A telephone survey was conducted in Calaveras and 11 other rural counties in California by the Public Health Institute in August, 2012. The survey was conducted as a part of the CA4Health Community Transformation Grant funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A majority of Calaveras respondents indicated obesity is a very or somewhat serious problem in their community, including among children and teens. “With 55% of Calaveras adults and 26% of our children and teens either overweight or obese, it’s not surprising that community concern about obesity is high”, stated Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer...

Business Focus with Mark Twain Medical Center's CEO Craig Marks (Welcome Home Update)

Posted by: thepinetree on 01/23/2013 07:31 PM
San Andeas, CA...(We planned this interview to be part of the Chamber's Welcome Home Campaign. We shot it a couple of weeks before the announcement so we thought a repost is in order. One of the things a vibrant and healthy community needs is quality health care. Mark Twain Medical Center's CEO Craig Marks and his team have the vision and plans to do just that) We had the pleasure to spend a few minutes with new Mark Twain Medical Center CEO Craig Marks. There have and will be big changes and plans at our local hospital and medical centers. They plan on recruiting up to 30 new providers over the next few years and they are opening up a new cancer center as well. We conducted our interview in a new Fluoroscopy Suite that is being installed.

Help With The Woes of Winter

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 01/14/2013 10:21 AM
Angels Camp, CA...The winter months bring cold weather, shorter days, and treacherous driving and walking conditions, which can lead to increased risk of falling on slippery or uneven surfaces. However, one does not have to accept that a fall this winter IS as an unavoidable inconvenience. Physical therapy may be the option to help minimize fall risk and avoid possible injuries that may arise from experiencing a fall....

Flu Vaccine Available at Calaveras Public Health Department

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 01/12/2013 01:30 PM
San Andreas, CA...Recent news reports of an expected severe flu season have created an interest in receiving flu vaccine. The Calaveras County Public Health Department encourages residents who have not been vaccinated to do so soon. “Flu cases in the U.S. have occurred earlier than normal and the severity of the flu this year is greater,” reported Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer. State and county health officials anticipate increased flu activity in California in the coming weeks and urge vaccination now. “Getting vaccinated now allows time for immunity to develop from the vaccine before cases increase,” Dr. Kelaita explained....

Kindness Week is February 11-17, 2013

Posted by: thepinetree on 01/06/2013 02:12 PM
Calaveras County and Beyond...Kindness Week is February 11-17, 2013! The idea is simple: When we make a conscious effort to perform a kind act, ripples of kindness flow forth. The grassroots effort to promote random acts of kindness firmly took hold in 1995 when the Angels Camp City Council issued a proclamation and The City of Angels became the first designated "Kindness Zone" in the United States. Since then, the ripples of kindness have continued to spread and now wash over all Calaveras County Schools in a celebration of kindness each February. For project information, please visit www.theseedsofkindness.com To learn more about random acts of kindness activities visit the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website at www.actsofkindness.org....

Red Cross Looking for Local Disaster Volunteers

Posted by: thepinetree on 01/04/2013 08:47 PM
Calaveras, CA...The American Red Cross is looking for local disaster volunteers. Having access to trained Disaster Action Team (DAT) local members is critical to the response of area emergency responders during a major disaster in Calaveras or a disaster affecting a single family. Thanks to many dedicated Calaveras County volunteers, the Red Cross is able to immediately respond to the immediate needs of Calaveras families affected by home fires, floods, wildfires and other disasters throughout the year in the Fire Protection Districts of West Point, San Andreas, CalCo (Jenny Lind/Foothill) and Central Calaveras...
