San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital, through its affiliation with Catholic Healthcare West, has announced the opening of the 2010 CHW Community Grants Program. The deadline for submission of Letters of Intent is August 23, 2010. The objective of CHW’s Community Grants Program is to award funding to nonprofit organizations whose proposals respond to the priorities identified in the community health assessment or the community benefit plans of Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital. The funds are to be used to provide services to underserved populations (economically poor; women and children; mentally or physically disabled; or other disenfranchised populations)...

Calaveras County – Pertussis, a disease of the lungs and throat caused by bacteria, has reached epidemic levels in California. Almost 1500 cases have been reported to date in California, a 5 fold increase from last year. The cases include 6 infant deaths, all less than 2 months of age. Three cases have been reported in Calaveras County at this time. In 2009, Calaveras had the highest pertussis case rate in the state...
