Endowment for Youth Grant Funding Available

The Endowment for Youth Program, sponsored by Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital, is now accepting applications for the 2009 Endowment for Youth Program. Each year the hospital’s Thrift Stores provide funding opportunities for not-for-profit Calaveras County projects that provide services to children ages 0-18. Public Health Advises Community to Help Prevent the Spread of Novel H1N1 Flu ~by Dean Kelaita, MD, Calaveras County Health Officer

Calaveras County, CA....A fourth case of novel H1N1 flu has occurred in Calaveras County indicating the virus is present and continuing to cause illness in Calaveras County. “The fourth case is a 13 year old youth from Mokelumne Hill,” stated Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “The youth was not hospitalized and is expected to fully recover,” said Dr. Kelaita. Flu-like illness is reportedly affecting students at Toyon Middle School in San Andreas. Most of the students were ill with fever and sore throat or cough. It is likely that some of the students have novel H1N1 influenza due to its known presence in the community. ....

San Andreas, CA....There was a lot of activity Tuesday evening in the Calaveras High School swimming pool and the commotion was NOT caused by a rowdy group of kids! No… This was all the work of the MASP. The Motherlode Adult Swim Program (MASP) is a course designed to help adults improve their fitness level by providing a low impact form of exercising that is healthy on the swimmer's back and joints.....

Health Care District Board to Meet in Valley Springs

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Mark Twain Health Care District Board of Directors will be held at the Villa Bakery, 1906 Vista Del Lago Dr., Valley Springs at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 26, 2009. The District Board welcomes the public to attend these offsite meetings in the various communities of Calaveras County. Offsite meetings are held every other month to provide better access to the residents, giving them an opportunity to learn more about the activities of the Health Care District.

Specializing in General Internal Medicine, Dr. Halat will be treating the adolescent through geriatric population for the full spectrum of medical concerns. His special interests include preventative medicine, hypertension, diabetes and holistic medicine. “I am very pleased to be a part of such a premier organization” said Dr. Halat. “The lifestyle of the area and the medical needs of the Copperopolis population are inter-related.
