There's Still Time to Contribute to an IRA for 2017 ~ From Brian J. Tewksbury

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/14/2018 11:37 AM
Murphys, CA....There's still time to make a regular IRA contribution for 2017! You have until your tax return due date (not including extensions) to contribute up to $5,500 for 2017 ($6,500 if you were age 50 by December 31, 2017). For most taxpayers, the contribution deadline for 2017 is April 17, 2018.  You can contribute to a traditional IRA, a Roth IRA, or both, as long as your total contributions don't exceed the annual limit (or, if less, 100% of your earned income). You may also be able to contribute to an IRA for your spouse for 2017, even if your spouse didn't have any 2017 income.

Semiannual Monetary Policy Report to the Congress by Fed Chairman Jerome H. Powell

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/27/2018 08:27 AM
Washington, DC....Chairman Hensarling, Ranking Member Waters, and members of the Committee, I am pleased to present the Federal Reserve's semiannual Monetary Policy Report to the Congress. On the occasion of my first appearance before this Committee as Chairman of the Federal Reserve, I want to express my appreciation for my predecessor, Chair Janet Yellen, and her important contributions. During her term as Chair, the economy continued to strengthen and Federal Reserve policymakers began to normalize both the level of interest rates and the size of the balance sheet. Together, Chair Yellen and I have worked to ensure a smooth leadership transition and provide for continuity in monetary policy. I also want to express my appreciation for my colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). Finally, I want to affirm my continued support for the objectives assigned to us by the Congress--maximum employment and price stability--and for transparency about the Federal Reserve's policies and programs. Transparency is the foundation for our accountability, and I am committed to clearly explaining what we are doing and why we are doing it. Today I will briefly discuss the current economic situation and outlook before turning to monetary policy.

Gross Domestic Product: Third Quarter 2017 Revised Up To 3.3%

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/29/2017 09:06 AM
Washington, DC...Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 3.3 percent in the third quarter of 2017 (table 1), according to the "second" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the second quarter, real GDP increased 3.1 percent. The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the "advance" estimate issued last month. In the advance estimate, the increase in real GDP was 3.0 percent. With this second estimate for the third quarter, the general picture of economic growth remains the same; nonresidential fixed investment, state and local government spending, and private inventory investment were revised up from the prior estimate (see "Updates to GDP" on page 2).

Deadline Approaching for Undoing a 2016 Roth IRA Conversion ~ From Brian J. Tewksbury

Posted by: thepinetree on 10/10/2017 12:47 PM
Murphys, CA...If you converted a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA in 2016 and your Roth IRA has sustained losses, you may want to consider whether it makes sense to undo (recharacterize) your conversion. You have until October 16, 2017, to undo your 2016 conversion.* A recharacterization can help you avoid paying income tax on IRA assets that have lost value since the conversion. When you recharacterize, your conversion is treated for tax purposes as if it never happened.
