Posted by: thepinetree on 02/15/2019 12:15 PM
Washington, DC...As we look to the future of agriculture, manufacturing, small business, education, and healthcare, we see a common thread: every advance requires robust Internet connectivity. Posted by: thepinetree on 02/04/2019 12:12 PM
Arnold, CA....Our favorite Super Bowl ad yesterday had to be the Microsoft XBox commercial showcasing their adaptive game controller that allows those with disabilities to adaptively program buttons, switches and contact pads to use the functionality they have to play. In an era where tech is at times deservedly maligned it was a great example where tech can make as all equal.

Posted by: thepinetree on 12/13/2018 10:42 PM
Washington, DC...Continuing its effort to close the digital divide, the Federal Communications Commission today took several steps to significantly improve the quality and expand the availability of high-speed Internet service in rural America. Included in these steps is additional funding for the Connect America Fund, the FCC’s program that helps expand broadband deployment and make broadband service more affordable in rural areas. In return for this increased funding, the FCC will require providers to expand the availability of faster service that will better meet the needs of consumers and businesses in today’s online world.

Be Extra Careful This Holiday Season as Many "Secure" Sites May Be Phishing For Your Info

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/28/2018 09:06 PM
Arnold, CA...As Google and other web infrastructure companies increasingly want all web traffic over encrypted or Https connections a disturbing trend has been emerging. According to data from 49% or almost half of all phishing or malware sites now use encryption. This can lull you into a false sense of security as they have the security padlock in the address bar and are not flagged in the browser as "Not Secure". So make sure that even though you are on a website that has a padlock that it is actually the site you were intending to visit. Just because an email says it is from a bank, shopping site or financial institution does not mean it actually is.

The Rise of Digital Authoritarianism and the Challenge to Democracy

Posted by: thepinetree on 11/02/2018 11:43 AM
Washington, DC...Governments around the world are tightening control over citizens’ data and using claims of “fake news” to suppress dissent, eroding trust in the internet as well as the foundations of democracy, according to Freedom on the Net 2018: The Rise of Digital Authoritarianism,  the latest edition of the annual country-by-country assessment of online freedom, released today by Freedom House. Online propaganda and disinformation have increasingly poisoned the digital sphere, while the unbridled collection of personal data is breaking down traditional notions of privacy. At the same time, China has become more brazen and adept at controlling the internet at home and exporting its techniques to other countries.
