SMUG To Explore Time Machine During September Meeting

Arnold, CA....Time Machine, the program that allows Apple users to back up valuable data, will be the subject of the next meeting of the Sierra Macintosh Users Group (SMUG) to be held Tuesday, September 14 beginning at 7 p.m. in the assembly room of the Ebbetts Pass Fire District, 1037 Blagen Rd., just off Highway 4. “One of the biggest reasons to choose Time Machine to create archives is its ease of use,” states club member Phill Hoxie who will make the presentation. “Apple says it takes just one click to set it up, which may be true in rare cases, but usually there is a bit more involved.”...

Golden State Cellular Announces: Expanded Mobile Broadband Coverage Multiple Sites

Golden State Cellular announces the addition of 3G Mobile Broadband to existing cell sites at the following locations: Strawberry Peak, Copper Cove, Mt. Reba, Big Oak Flat, Murphys, Rushing Mountain, Pino Blanco (Coulterville), Hwy 4/49 intersection Angels Camp and Yosemite Village. With customers increasing appetite for mobile data applications such as: email, internet access and picture messaging, 3G Mobile Broadband provides a more robust data experience with higher data rates (speed) and the ability to transfer larger files, stream video and music. The company is scheduled to add the technology to multiple existing sites before the end of 2010.....

Golden State Cellular Rolls Out 3G In Murphys

Murphys, CA...For all you speed junkies out there we confirmed this morning with Golden State Cellular's Marketing Director Darrell Slocum that they have switched on 3G on their Murphys Tower. Now you will be able to browse, message, and move those large files at breakneck speed. Data roaming is moving closer as well with an September roll out. CPUC Approves Broadband Grant for Calaveras Poker Flat Project

SAN FRANCISCO, July 29, 2010 - The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) today approved a matching grant of $640,698 from the California Advanced Services Fund (CASF) to the Calaveras Telephone Company’s Poker Flat project to bring high-speed Internet access to isolated, underserved communities on Lake Tulloch in the Sierra foothills. The CPUC’s CASF matching grant, which is 10 percent of the total cost of $6,406,976, is contingent upon approval of a 64 percent matching grant of $4.08 million from the $7.2 billion broadband stimulus portion of the federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. The balance of $1.68 million for the project will be provided by Calaveras Telephone from its own capital sources....

Arnold, CA...In great technology news for today Golden State Cellular went live with their 3G/EVDO site in Arnold. So now if you want to check that email from White Pines Park...no problem. Ride the Rim Trail and stop and web conference to China...Done. Golden State has also stated previously that data roaming is coming in September so now all of the those Verizon customers can soon move packets to their heart's content....

An exploration of Google Docs, a free, web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, form, and data storage service offered by Google, will be the subject of the next meeting of the Sierra Macintosh Users Group (SMUG) to be held Tuesday, July 13 beginning at 7 p.m. in the assembly room of the Ebbetts Pass Fire District, 1037 Blagen Rd., just off Highway 4. Brian Thomas, Technology Specialist and Trainer for the Calaveras County Office of Education will be conducting the tour.  He will demonstrate how to create and collaborate on documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, forms and more.  As is always the case with these meetings, there will be subjects covered and questions answered that are not on the agenda.....

I have always been a proponent of free PC software (freeware), especially Anti-Virus software. I’ve never liked the notion that you have to pay someone just to protect your PC from the vulnerabilities of Viruses and Spyware. Unfortunately, Anti-Virus software is a life necessity, but it doesn’t have to break the bank for good protection. Most new PC’s do come pre-loaded with some form of Anti-Virus software, but usually these are time limited trial versions that will expire within 30-90 days. Jamestown, CA...Golden State Cellular hosted one of the biggest tech events in recent memory for our area last night! There were dignitaries, cool gifts, wine tasting and even Android themed cupcakes, cookies and snacks. It was a launch party for not only their new Android powered HTC phones it was also a celebration of their new 3G network. These events are a huge step forward for our area.
