Mark Twain Medical Center Awards $26,000 in Community Grants to Non Profit Organizations |

San Andreas, CA...Yesterday Mark Twain Medical Center continued their tradition of helping in the community. They held their Annual Awards Luncheon at the hospital where the 6 organizations were chosen to receive grants from a total of 19 who applied. The awardees are: Arc of Amador and Calaveras – (provides support and services to persons with developmental disabilities to encourage mainstream life, work, learning and recreation). Disability Resource Agency for Independent (supports the independence of individuals with disabilities through resources, advocacy and services). Ebbetts Pass Firefighters Association (CPR classes and AED education for community). San Andreas Community Covenant Church (to provide free community meals every Wednesday). Resource Connection - Food Bank (serves 2,523 families-accounting for 17% of the population of Calaveras County). The Volunteer Center (mileage reimbursement to volunteers that provide transportation to vulnerable citizens)...

Angels Camp, CA...Stop by Calaveras Humane Society's Thrift Store Cat Adoption Center in Angels Camp, located in Angels Town Center (240 S. Main St./Hwy 49). We have NEW HOURS for the Angels Camp Adoption Center—Thursday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm, so we will open an hour later than we have in the past. The Arnold Adoption Center still opens at 10am, so this change only applies to the Angels Camp location.

January is National Mentoring Month: Be Someone Who Matters to Someone Who Matters |

Angels Camp, CA...his January marks the 13th annual National Mentoring Month, a campaign aimed at expanding quality mentoring programs and connecting more of our community’s young people with caring adults. Here in Calaveras County, the Calaveras County Office of Education administers two youth mentoring programs: the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program, which supports 25-30 matches at a time between children and caring adult friends; and the FNL Mentoring Program, which connects up to 30 middle school students with high school mentors each year. Both the Calaveras County Board of Education and the Board of Supervisors annually recognize National Mentoring Month and express their gratitude for our community’s volunteer mentors....

San Andreas, CA...Seasonal flu [influenza] activity has been increasing dramatically across the United States and areas of California over the past week. The cases have included young and middle aged adults as well as those at high risk of serious illness and death. To date, four flu linked deaths have been reported in California in persons less than 64 years of age. Dean Kelaita, MD, County Health Officer, stated, “No flu deaths have been reported in Calaveras County to date.” ....
