Hwy 108 Head on Collision Takes Life of Turlock Man

Jamestown, CA...On Wednesday, January 3, 2018, just before 2 pm, a 23 year old Turlock resident, Eddie Fernando Gonzales Jr, was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound on State Route 108/120, east of Lancaster Road at approximately 55 mph, negotiating a right hand curve in the road. At this time, 54 year old Los Altos resident, Edward Laverone, was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound on State Route 108/120, east of Lancaster Road at approximately 55 mph, negotiating a left hand curve in the road. For unknown reasons, Mr. Gonzales allowed his Jeep to travel over the double yellow lines into the eastbound lane, directly into the path of Mr. Laverone. Mr. Laverone was unable to take evasive action to avoid a collision and the vehicles collided head-on. The Jeep came to rest on its wheels facing a easterly direction and blocking the westbound lane. The Tahoe came to rest on its wheels facing a north easterly direction blocking the east bound lane.

Jerry Byrd 1943 - 2017

Mountain Ranch, CA...Jerry Byrd 11/28/43 to 1/2/18 74 years old. Jerry died peacefully in his sleep the morning of Jan 2nd. Seventh child of eight, born in Alabama. Came out to Southern California at age 16. Meet his wife Sally in 1965, married in 1966 in Huntington Park. After the birth of their twins moved to Mountain Ranch in January of 1967. Various jobs included carpet cleaning & laying, Safeway in Altaville when it first opened, Calaveras County Road Department then had his own excavation business until he retired in 2004.

Dave Silva May 27, 1956 – Nov 30, 2017, Angels Camp, Hayward, Kansas City & Savannah

Angels Camp, CA...It is with great sadness that the family of Dave Silva announces his passing after a brief illness, complicated by his battle with multiple sclerosis, on Thursday, November 30, 2017, at the age of 61 years. Dave will be lovingly remembered by his mother, Patricia Joan (Kingman) Silva and his two sisters, Deborah (Silva) Douglass and Pamela (Silva) Hodges. Dave will also be fondly remembered by his brothers-in-law Roger Douglass and James Hodges, his niece and four nephews, and his great-niece and nine great nephews. Dave was predeceased by his father George Elmer Silva and his nephew Chad James Hodges. He raised three step-children; Nicole, Josh, and Brian Walsh, who he loved until the day he died.

Arnold, CA...Ronald David Burns, Arnold, CA, age 84, died of a heart attack on Saturday, December 23, 2017. Ron was born on August 11, 1933 at Jefferson Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. He was the only child of, Norbert P. Burns (Paddy), originally from Pennsylvania, and Olive Anderson Burns, originally from Oklahoma . His son, Paul Norbert Burns, (62) and daughter-in-law, Lynn V. Burns of San Jose, CA, were with him as he passed away. He is survived by his son, Michael Scott Burns (64) of Ocean Springs, Mississippi and two grandsons, Christopher Patrick Burns, also from Ocean Springs, and Andrew Ian Burns from White House, Tennessee. Still friends with his ex-wives, Gwen, who lives in Coos Bay, Oregon and Maureen from Palm Desert, CA.

Artist Martha J. Wallace Passed Away on December 12 at 68

Arnold, CA...Martha J. Wallace passed away following a short illness on December 12, 2017 surrounded by her family and friends at the age of 68. Born in the Bay Area, Martha spent her youth in Castro Valley. She studied art in high school and college and began painting in watercolor in 1975. Martha, and her family settled in the Arnold area in 1977.

He provided play-by-play for various sports on numerous radio and television networks (including NBC, CBS, and ESPN), and for individual teams, over the course of an approximately 60-year career.

Nancy Shacklett 1920 - 2017

Murphys, CA...Nancy was born to Lloyd and Evelyn Garrison in Salt Lake City, Utah. At the age of ten, she and her family moved to Los Angeles where she grew up with her sister Barbara and brother Jack. She was a proud graduate of UCLA and a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She originally intended to pursue a career as a professional pianist, but decided to earn her teaching credential and taught young children for many years in Hawaii and California while raising a family of her own. Throughout her life she enjoyed traveling within the United States and to other countries, learning about U.S. history, and researching the family’s genealogy.

Collision on Boards Crossing Takes Life of Dorrington Man

Dorrington, CA...On the evening December 16th A 53 year old Dorrington man was driving a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 pickup eastbound on Boards Crossing Road, approaching Snowshoe Thompson Trail at an unknown speed. He failed to negotiate a split in the roadway and continued into the intersection of Boards Crossing Road at Snowshoe Thompson Trail and struck a tree. He was pronounced deceased on scene.

Dorrington, CA...Jon “Jonathan” Alan Hughes, born July 27, 1954 passed away in a car accident late Saturday, December 16th, 2017. He was born in San Diego, CA and lived most of his adult life in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s. Jon was an avid sportsman. There was not a sport he did not excel in. Tennis, golf, snow skiing, softball, and horseshoes were all favorites of his. He was a daydreamer and loved story telling. His passion was music and he loved everything about it. Jon was a talented musician and always had a new jingle to share. He had many artistic abilities and loved working with his hands. Many are lucky to have some of his wooden, carved sculptures in their art collections.
