Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/05/2011 02:07 PM
|
Calaveras County, CA....The 2011 Calaveras County Academic Decathlon is coming up on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Bret Harte High School from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM. Grades 9-12 are welcome. The Academic Decathlon, the premiere national scholastic competition for high school students, was created to provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual academic competition. Each student competes in ten events which are Economics, Essay, Art, Interview, Language and Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Science and Speech. Each year the Science or Social Science topic is used as the Super Quiz topic. The competition format of the Super Quiz differs from that of the other subject areas. While students take one written test in each of the other six subjects, they will take two tests in the Super Quiz subject: one written and the other oral. The oral relay portion of the Super Quiz is the only part of the actual testing that is open to the public, and it is inevitably one of the most memorable and exciting parts of the Academic Decathlon competition.....

San Andreas, CA...At this mornings Board of Supervisors Meeting Supervisor Tom Tryon was elected to be the Board Chair for 2011. Supervisor Gary Tofanelli was elected as Vice Chair. New Supervisor, Darren Spellman, took his place with the Board. He also signaled that he was ready to wade in literally and figuratively into his new job. He was proudly wearing hip waders to signal to his constituents and others in the county that he is ready and willing to work. As usual in the first meeting of a new year, there was jockeying for committee assignments, allegiances and alliances looking for that ever illusive third vote...
