4. Explore Calaveras’ Historic Downtowns

Murphys Historic Main Street | Jenny Martin
Discover the history that surrounds the region and shop the myriad of specialty family owned businesses in our charming historic Gold Rush era buildings. While you’re in Moke Hill, stop in Renegade Winery for some of their award winning Cabernet Sauvignon.  Angels CampMurphysMokelumne Hill, and San Andreas each have a piece of California history worth exploring. What is a “Hop-of-Fame” and what’s with all the frogs?  Where is the first 3-story building built in California? Who were the two famous stagecoach robbers whose trials were held at the courthouse that still stands in San Andreas? What town features one of the oldest, continually operating (dare we say, haunted) hotels in California?

Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway (part of Highway 4) is a high mountain pass in Alpine County that was used by the Miwok and Washoe people to trek over the Sierra Nevada mountains. In 1850, John Ebbetts, for whom the pass is now named, guided a band of miners over in search of gold in California. In the summertime, Highway 4 is open through to Nevada, however it is usually closed from November through May due to snow.  There is plenty of history to discover along this highway, especially at the quaint and oldest Chevron gas station located at the Camp Connell General Store. Take some time this weekend to take this beautiful drive into the High Sierra

5. One More Thing – Posterity Ciderworks

Wild. Rural. Rare. Brand new in Mokelumne Hill, Calaveras County, Posterity Ciderworks is a small scale cidery and orchard that produces estate and small batch heritage apple, pear and quince alcoholic ciders. Sustainability and regenerative agriculture are central to their mission, as is allowing fruit varietal character to shine through. Take a 30-minute tour with their head cider maker that also includes a one hour table service tasting experience. Make reservations early since they are exclusive to only 10 people per time slot and there are only two time slots per day. What a great idea!

Looking for a place to stay?

From quaint and comfortable to spacious and luxurious, Calaveras has the lodging you’re looking for here.  If you need any help planning the rest of your stay here in Calaveras, please feel free to give us a call at the Calaveras Visitors Bureau 209-736-0049. Or better yet, come see as at the Angels Camp Museum – 753 South Main Street, Angels Camp, CA 95222.  We LOVE having visitors! Happy and safe travels!!
08/31/2024 - Steve Miller Band Returns to Ironstone on August 31st
Murphys, CA...Steve Miller Band has been announced to play Ironstone Amphitheatre in Murphys, CA as part of the Black Oak Casino Summer Concert Series on Saturday, August 31st. Tickets go on sale this Friday, April 5 at 10am through Ticketmaster.

Steve Miller has been a monumental presence on the American music scene for more than half a century – and, in the course of that era, his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed billions of times. Miller’s Greatest Hits 1974-78 received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of more than fifteen million copies. It is among the 25 best-selling albums of all time.

At the start of his career, Miller was a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late ’60s. With albums like Children of the FutureSailor and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music – and, indeed, society – could be in the years to come.

Then, beginning in the ‘70s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was smart, polished, exciting and irresistible – and that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love,” “Swingtown” and “Abracadabra,” among them. To this day, those songs are instantly recognizable the moment you hear them – and impossible not to sing along with. Their hooks are the very definition of indelible.

Running through Miller’s distinctive catalog is a combination of virtuosity and song craft. And that’s no accident. His parents were jazz aficionados – not to mention close friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford – so, as a budding guitarist, Miller absorbed valuable lessons from that musical tradition. When the family moved to Texas, Miller deepened his education in the blues, eventually relocating to Chicago, where he played with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, James Cotton and Paul Butterfield. That range of sources informs his music to this day.

In recent years, Miller has fully immersed himself in the blues and its many byways. As he has always done, he continues to find creative outlets for the full panoply of his musical passions. On his successful tours with the Steve Miller Band, he complements the commercial peaks of his extensive catalogue with lesser-known songs that expand his fans’ awareness of the range of his work.

As a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center and at the request of Wynton Marsalis, he is defining a blues pedagogy for Jazz at Lincoln Center and has curated and headlined a series of shows that explore themes like the bridge from blues to jazz in the music of guitar great T-Bone Walker; the distinctive sounds of the blues triangle of Memphis, Texas and Chicago; the resonances between the singular musical creations of Ma Rainey and Miles Davis; the deep American roots music of Appalachia; Cannonball Adderley and the Blues; Steve Miller on Steve Miller which explored his own influences and the music they inspired and most recently the Future of the Blues.

He is also a member of the visiting committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Indeed, five of his guitars were displayed in “Play It Loud: The Instruments of Rock and Roll,” a groundbreaking exhibition at the Met that ran for six months in 2019. Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022.

He has recently begun to open his vaults for the first time, releasing the acclaimed Welcome to the Vault box set in 2019 and Breaking Ground Live! August 3, 1977 in 2021. 2023 marked the 50th anniversary of the release of the chart-topping, RIAA Platinum-certified studio album The Joker. To celebrate this important moment in his career, Steve Miller released a groundbreaking new box set chronicling the extraordinary artistic journey that led to its creation: J50: The Evolution of The Joker.

With each listen the beauty and immediacy of Miller’s work, whether at its most playful or most serious, is palpable. As always, whether he was riding the top of the charts or traveling the endless blue highways of American music, you can hear him playing and singing with conviction and precision, passion and eloquence, making music that is at once immediately accessible, thrillingly alive in the present, respectful of the past, and more than able to stand the test of time.

Get your tickets to see Steve Miller Band Live at Ironstone Amphitheatre on August 31st this Friday, April 5th at 10am through Ticketmaster.

03/15/2024 - Murphys Irish Day Is Coming March 16, 2024. A Look Back at Photos & Video from 2018 to Set the Mood
Murphys, CA...Saturday, March 16, 2024 – 10am to 5pm. A Celebration of the Irish! Free Admission! One of the premier annual events in the Mother Lode is Murphys Irish Day. Each year on the third Saturday in March, thousands of people from Northern California and beyond gather in the historic gold rush town of Murphys to honor its Celtic heritage and to celebrate as only the Irish can. Our picturesque Main Street is filled with booths offering handcrafted items, original art, photographs, tasty food, wine, and other beverages.

The day begins with a pancake breakfast from 8:30-10:30 am at the First Congregational Church of Murphys just a block off Main Street at the corner of Church & Algiers Streets. Purchase tickets in advance from their website.

At 11 am, the swirl of bagpipes heralds a parade of marching bands, classic cars, horses, community organizations, novelty entries, and some of the finest children in the land. This year we will be honoring Jan & Patty Schulz, owners of The Spice Tin and tireless supporters of Murphys who will serve as the Grand Marshalls of the parade.

The day continues with live entertainment on two stages and the street featuring singers, dancers, musicians, and jugglers.

All this, in addition to the charming shops, fine restaurants, and tasting rooms that line historic Main Street and help create what is nationally recognized as one of the finest small towns in America.

This year the Murphys Community Club will be hosting the Murphys School of Music and selling food & drink in the Community Park from noon-4. Enjoy performances by the Murphys School of Music students and take a walk through the park down to the Creek for a break from the crowds on the street.

The Native Daughters will be hosting a Scavenger Hunt beginning in their Hall. Purchase a ticket and be entered for a chance to win a cash prize and show off your skills.

The Murphys Business Association hosts Irish Day each year with the knowledge that if you visit Murphys once, you will want to return again and again. Our next community event will be Spring Wine Weekend, hosted by the Calaveras Wine Grape Alliance. Please stop by our Visitors Center at the corner of Main Street & Big Trees Road to catch up with them and our stage sponsor, the Calaveras Visitor’s Bureau, to learn more about Wine Weekend, local wines & wineries, and all the other ways to play in Murphys and Calaveras County.

Sponsored by the Murphys Business Association, Murphys Irish Day is a fundraiser for many community projects and non-profit organizations and is the primary fundraiser for the Murphys Business Association and the Murphys Firefighters Association.
