Calaveras County Arbor Day Celebration April 26th

Avery, CA...The Calaveras County Arbor Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 26th at Avery Middle School, just off Hwy 4 in Avery. The ceremony will begin promptly at 10 a.m. with the presentation of a commemorative plaque and will include the planting of a California Black Oak. This event is free and family-friendly. Representatives from organizations dealing with various aspects of our environment will be present to share information....

Arnold, CA...Matthew McCullough, an 11 year old boy who resides in Arnold and attends Avery Middle School, found out he had a brain tumor on February 28th, 2008. He was then taken to Stanford Medical Center for surgery and now his treatments. They removed the Tumor, but on Thursday March 6th, the family found out the Tumor was Cancer. The name of his Tumor is Medulloblastoma and it is malignant. He now needs to have Radiation and Chemotherapy. Matt started his six weeks of Radiation treatments on March 26th and then will have Chemotherapy, for about ten months afterwards. He hopes to feel better at the end of the treatments.....

Angels Camp, CA...We had the pleasure to talk for a few minutes with Ray Waller, the former head Calaveras County Building official on the ongoing driveway slope controversy. For those of you who may not remember the county stopped issuing permits for development on parcels where the driveway slope exceeds 16%. This has numerous parcels currently tied up in protraced if not uncloseable escrows and has thrown the value of hundreds of millions of dollars of county real estate and homes into question. We wanted to talk with Ray about this issue because he was with the county and the building department when the original county ordinance was created to comply with state code 4290...

"At the Apple Ranch off Hwy 4 it has been snowing all day long for the most part, but didn't start to stick to the ground till about 3:30pm Since then it's has been snowing on and off and now at 11:00pm we have accumulated 2 inches and it is snowing hard. The national weather services says we could expect up to 8 inches to accumulate by morning."

Mokelumne Hill, CA...We were passed along some news that cuts are ahead for local Ambulance service from American Legion due to hard economic times. The Mokelumne Hill Unit will be phased out completely and the hours of an additional Unit will be curtailed. The call volumes have been lower than expected so they feel cuts are necessary...
