Sacramento, CA...Governor Gavin Newsom issued the following statement today in response to President Trump’s proposed plans to deport undocumented immigrants, including asylum seekers: “The President’s proposed raids are cruel, misdirected and are creating unnecessary fear and anxiety. I want Californians to know they have legal rights and protections, regardless of their immigration status. California is a place of refuge – that includes our schools, our courts and our hospitals and clinics. We hold certain institutions sacred and people should continue to access programs and services they need.”

Sacramento, CA...Governor Gavin Newsom today issued the following statement regarding the death of Sacramento Police Department Officer Tara O’Sullivan: “Officer O’Sullivan represented the best of what we hope to be as human beings in her selfless service to the community and readiness to help those in need,” said Governor Newsom. “She knew the dangers of the job, yet chose to dedicate herself at such a young age to those values anyway. Today it’s my privilege to award our nation’s highest civilian honor to the father of supply-side economics: Dr. Arthur Laffer. (Applause.) I know Art has been to the Oval Office, unlike most people, many times. But this is a very special time for you. This is a tremendous award. Washington, DC...Well, thank you very much. We had some good news. The market hit a all-time high today. The S&P just broke its record, so we’re very happy about that. The stock market continues to do well. Jobs have been literally through the roof. And, speaking of jobs, we have the USMCA with Canada, with Mexico. And we’ve come a long way. It’s a great agreement. As you know, Mexico, yesterday, approved it.

Sacramento, CA...At the request of Governor Gavin Newsom and in commemoration of June as LGBTQ Pride Month, the Pride flag will be flown on the main flagpole of the State Capitol building today through July 1 for the first time in state history. The flag was raised this morning by staff from the California Department of General Services with oversight from an honor guard from the California National Guard.

Governor Gavin Newsom today issued an apology through executive order on behalf of California to California Native American Peoples for the many instances of violence, mistreatment and neglect inflicted upon California Native Americans throughout the state’s history. The Governor also announced the creation of a Truth and Healing Council to provide an avenue for California Native Americans to clarify the record – and provide their historical perspective – on the troubled relationship between tribes and the state. This is the first time a state has taken dual action to correct the historical record and acknowledge wrongdoing through executive order mandate and a tribally-led, consultation-informed council.
