CAL FIRE Increases Firefighter Staffing in Central Valley & Sierra |
Posted by: thepinetree on 02/12/2014 08:29 AM

Sacramento, CA...Despite recent rain, California has not received enough rainfall to make up for this winter’s dry weather pattern and the third dry year in a row. As a result, continued drought conditions and wildfires have required CAL FIRE to hire several dozen seasonal firefighters earlier than normal across the Central Valley and Central Sierra. “The recent rainfall is not enough for us to let our guard down,” said Chief Dale Hutchinson, CAL FIRE Southern Region Chief. “Though the rain is great in the short term, even if it rained straight for several months, we wouldn’t catch up to the amount of rainfall we need.” The additional seasonal firefighter hiring includes 15 firefighters in CAL FIRE's Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit, 14 in the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit, and 12 in the Fresno-Kings Unit. The additional firefighters come just one week after nearly two dozen seasonal firefighters were hired in Tulare County....

Several dozen members of the local community attended three previous Open Houses held in December which provided an overview of the initial proposed actions and poster presentations by various resource experts. Community Plans out of General Plan? ~MyValleySprings.com |

Valley Springs, CA...Communities and the General Plan. At the General Plan meeting on January 28, it was suggested ALL Community and Special Plans may be LEFT OUT of the Calaveras County General Plan update—that those Plans could be addressed later, AFTER the General Plan is adopted. The reason given for removing community plans was to speed up the General Plan revision process, because it would be too “complex” to bring both existing and new community plans into legal and technical consistency with the new General Plan. But wait—aren’t our Calaveras communities the heart of Calaveras County? Aren’t Community Plans the building blocks for the General Plan? Aren’t already-adopted Community and Special Plans considered part of the General Plan by State law? Didn’t the County promise in 2007 to include community plans in the General Plan update?

|
Washington, DC...Earlier this week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed House Amendment 554 by Representative Tom McClintock (R-CA). This amendment added language to HR 2954, a wider public lands package, that would expedite the post-Rim Fire timber salvage process on federal Forest Service lands around, but not within the boundaries of, Yosemite National Park. The bill would allow for an expedited environmental review process for salvage and restoration projects in those areas, dramatically decreasing the amount of time and costs associated with completing these activities.... |
