Taxpayers Promoting Constitution |

Copperopolis, CA...The Calaveras County Taxpayers Association (CCTA) is launching an outreach effort to promote constitutional principles through distribution of a booklet, The US Constitution and Fascinating Facts About It, to public officials and other leaders in Calaveras County. The group's President, Al Segalla, said "The first batch of booklets will be presented to county supervisors at the board meeting on Tuesday, February 25. More copies will be presented to other officials, educators and leaders in the near future. A Constitution contest with prizes for students is being considered. CCTA previously sponsored a student contest for posters and essays and the proud winners were presented awards from Congressman, Tom McClintock."

Hagel Outlines Budget Reducing Troop Strength, Force Structure |

Washington, DC...Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has proposed cuts in military spending that include further reductions in troop strength and force structure in every military service in the coming year as part of an effort to prioritize U.S. strategic interests in the face of reduced resources after more than a decade of war.

Washington, DC...Hi, everybody. Restoring the idea of opportunity for all requires a year of action from all of us. Wherever I can act on my own, I will – and whenever I can ask more Americans to help, I’ll do that too. In my State of the Union Address, for example, I asked more business leaders to take action to raise their employees’ wages. Because even though our economy is growing, and our businesses have created about eight and a half million new jobs over the past four years, average wages have barely budged.

New CalPERS Costs To Be Borne By Local Governments |

Sacramento, CA...Earlier this week, the Board of Directors of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) adopted new actuarial assumptions. These assumptions stem from recent staff reviews of the overall system and needs associated with providing benefits to its members. The adoption of these new assumptions will result in employer (local government members and the State of California) contribution rates increasing. The CalPERS Board of Directors also decided to implement a payment scheme to meet these obligations. Local governments will utilize the “20-5” option whereby the increased costs to local governments will be paid over 20 years with a five year ramp-up and a five year ramp-down. Two alternative options for local governments were considered – a “20-7” scheme or a “30-5” scheme – but neither of these options was adopted. In adopting the 20-5 scheme, payments by local government members will commence in the 2016-17 Fiscal Year. It should be noted that local governments do have the option to pay these new liabilities in advance to minimize finance costs....

I was raised in Calaveras County and have lived here most of my life. My wife and I chose to raise our five children here. Having lived in Arnold, Hathaway Pines, and Murphys, I have a deep understanding of our area, its treasures and our challenges. I believe that I have the ideas, skills, experience, and the energy needed to meet our challenges. If elected, I have many goals that I will work towards. These goals include Promote smart growth. Emphasize excellent customer service at the county level.m Encourage business investment by soliciting and encouraging businesses to relocate to Calaveras County, and by removing bureaucratic obstacles to business investment. World Press Freedom Index 2014...The Biggest Rises & Falls Press Freedom..US Down To 46th |

Paris, France...The 2014 World Press Freedom Index spotlights the negative impact of conflicts on freedom of information and its protagonists. The ranking of some countries has also been affected by a tendency to interpret national security needs in an overly broad and abusive manner to the detriment of the right to inform and be informed. This trend constitutes a growing threat worldwide and is even endangering freedom of information in countries regarded as democracies. Finland tops the index for the fourth year running, closely followed by Netherlands and Norway, like last year. At the other end of the index, the last three positions are again held by Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea, three countries where freedom of information is non-existent. Despite occasional turbulence in the past year, these countries continue to be news and information black holes and living hells for the journalists who inhabit them. This year’s index covers 180 countries, one more than last year. The new entry, Belize, has been assigned an enviable position (29th). Cases of violence against journalists are rare in Belize but there were some problems: defamation suits involving demands for large amounts in damages, national security restrictions on implementation of the Freedom of Information Act and sometimes unfair management of broadcast frequencies.

Stanislaus National Forest Solicits Public Input On OHV Program |

Sonora, CA…The Stanislaus National Forest (NF) is soliciting public input on the preliminary 2015 off-highway vehicle (OHV) proposal, a key funding component for off-highway trail and facility forest maintenance, from March 4 to April 7. The California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHVMR) Division grant will support: facility operations and maintenance (e.g., Hull Creek Campground, Crandall OHV, Niagara OHV); trail repair and maintenance; installation of directional and educational trail signing; barrier placement; routine law enforcement patrols; and visitor education.
