09/29/2019 - Union Congregational Church Celebrates 150th Anniversary! Community Invited to Celebration Sunday!
Angels Camp, CA...Union Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, the first Open and Affirming church in Calaveras County, will be celebrating its 150th anniversary serving Angels Camp and Calaveras county this Sunday, with a 10:00 AM worship service and catered noon luncheon. All who are friends of "the little church with the great big heart" are welcome to attend. Music during the worship service will include hymns written as early as the 18th century and on down the years to hymns from the late 20th century. Pastor Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Armstrong's sermon will be "Birth, Life, and Restoration." Following the worship service, music will be performed prior to lunch by Mountain Melody and Yeshua's House, and singing led by Dr. Darryl Hollinger, music director at First Congregational Church of Murphys.

Union has a long history of service in Calaveras County. John Anderson, the late Pastor Emeritus, was very active in getting Calaveras Habitat for Humanity started. During the Butte Fire, Pastor Armstrong and council member Gail Williams served as members of the spiritual care team, and the church, with the assistance of Sierra Quilt Guild, "adopted" two families that had been completely burned out, and, through the UCC national program "Neighbors in Need," was able to provide approximately $4000 in goods to fire victims. Last year, during the Camp Fire, the church provided warm gloves for 200 fire fighters. Union is currently active serving on the Calaveras County Homeless Coalition, and in supporting the Resource Center, Sierra Hope, and the 12-Step community. Currently ten groups meet at the church during each week. Our favorite saying about our church is "We are small, but we are mighty!"

Whatever your connection with Union Congregational Church, we invite you to join us for our 150th Anniversary celebration. If you plan to come to the luncheon, please RSVP to Gail Williams at 209-559-1805 by Saturday.

On January 16, 2019 the Oliveto Family purchased the former location of Irish Vineyards in Vallecito, CA. This is the now the location of the Stevenot Winery production facility as well as a second Tasting Room currently opened every Saturday and Sunday. “We are excited to have this opportunity to move the production facility back to Calaveras County and to be close to Murphys.” stated Jon Oliveto, President and Production Manager for Stevenot Winery. With everyone in the company living in Murphys it made sense to pursue the opportunity. Over the past few months the Oliveto family has started on the complete remodeling to include the winery and tasting room as well as the historic Batten House. “We have so many plans including more parties and bringing live music to this venue. On weekends we will have winery and vineyard tours including barrel tastings.” said Lorraine Oliveto, Tasting Room Manager for both locations. Stevenot will be doing their crush in the new location and then begin production shortly after that working with Stevenot’s Winemaker, Nancy Steel. Stay tuned and look for more information on events and the Grand Opening!

More about the history of Stevenot Winery and the Oliveto Family . . . . .
Wine, gold, history, and heritage are all part of the rich and colorful tradition that is Stevenot Winery. With a new Winery Property and Tasting Room located in Vallecito and the Tasting Room on Main Street located in downtown Murphys, in the heart of the Sierra Foothills of Calaveras County, Stevenot’s beginnings hark back long before their first release of wine in 1979.

The first Stevenots came to the area during the great Gold Rush of the mid 1800’s. During that time vineyards began cropping up throughout the region as miners from France, Germany, and Italy were creating a demand for wine on an unprecedented scale. At one time the Sierra Foothills rivaled the areas of Napa and Sonoma combined in vineyard acreage with over 100 wineries established.

Although the industry eventually declined with the advent of prohibition, it wasn’t long before a fifth generation member of the Stevenot family took up where his family had left off and established the winery in the late 1970’s. Recognized as one of the pioneers of the rebirth of wine production in the Sierra Foothills, Stevenot Winery quickly secured its reputation for producing world class wines and for their innovative and award winning style.

A New Generation
On February 10, 2010 Oliveto Distributing, Inc. became the proud new owner of Stevenot Wines, operating the Stevenot Tasting Room on Murphys’ Main Street, as well as the Stevenot Wine Club. Brothers Jon Oliveto and David Oliveto are the Owners of the well-respected and long-standing distribution company previously based out of Sutter Creek and now located in Vallecito. “We are very honored and excited to have this opportunity!” exclaims David Oliveto, Vice President of Stevenot Winery. “We want to carry on the tradition of Barden Stevenot and grow the business. Stevenot has always been a quality brand, well respected in the community and has always sold very well. This compliments the wine in the bottle.” The Oliveto family has distributed Stevenot wines since the early 1980’s, when White Zinfandel was their best seller. “It’s all about quality.” adds Jon. “We have been in the distribution business our whole lives and will continue to focus on wine making.”

Oliveto Family History
Born and raised in Jackson, Jon and David began working at very early ages, with their father Ross Oliveto’s milk distributing business which opened in the late 1960’s. With close to 50 years in the industry serving the region, the Oliveto family knows the business and the community well.
In 1979 the milk distribution company was sold and the Oliveto family went into the beer and soft drink distribution business serving Calaveras, Amador and Tuolumne counties. In the early 1980’s a wine division was added. The company was honored with the Miller Masters award in the early 1990’s, placing them in the top seven distributors in the United States. They were also awarded the High Life Achievement by Miller Brewing Company in 2002 and 2003, given to the top 40 distributors out of a roster of 450 companies.

The community has embraced Jon and David with open arms. “It surprises us how excited people are about our new venture.” Jon said. “We are receiving overwhelming support.”

Jon and his wife Lori now live in Murphys. David has lived in Calaveras County for 20 years and resides in Murphys with his wife, Lorraine. Daughters Elizabeth and Brooke (with her husband Robert and newborn son Cashton) are also residents of Murphys.

The Oliveto family welcomes and encourages your comments, suggestions and input.
09/20/2019 - Hospice of Amador & Calaveras’ 20th Annual Art Auction at Karmère Winery & Vineyards!
Jackson, CA...Hospice of Amador & Calaveras’ signature fundraising event, the 20th Annual Art Auction, is almost underway, but tickets are going quickly. On Friday, September 20, this popular affair is once again being hosted at Karmère Vineyards & Winery in the Shenandoah Valley. The evening promises an unforgettable experience, including music, wine, food, art, and what could be a record turnout. Tickets and a few tables of four, six or eight are still available, but they will not last long!

This elegant evening, set against the panoramic backdrop of harvest-season vineyards, will begin with a preview of raffle prizes and unique pieces of artwork donated by talented local artists. Guests will nosh on appetizers, sip award-winning Amador County wine, and enjoy the late-summer sunset. A sit-down dinner provided in partnership by The National Hotel & Bistro49 Culinary Laboratory will be followed by a live auction, giving guests an opportunity to take home inspired pieces of art, or perhaps this year’s signature “experience” auction item: a Taste of Spain chef-inspired winemaker dinner for 20 people, featuring traditional paella and Spanish varietals. Donated by Volcano Union Pub + Inn and Bokisch Vineyards.

Local long-time favorite Herb Boxhorn returns to bring his flavor of jazz, swing, and blues with a set list of eclectic music from the thirties to today.

For only $100 per person, guests will experience a delightful and delicious evening, with all proceeds benefiting Hospice of Amador & Calaveras—our region’s only non-profit, independent hospice agency. For more than 35 years, Hospice of Amador & Calaveras has provided families with compassionate end-of-life care for all who need it, regardless of ability to pay.

This event would not be possible without the generous donation of the venue by Karmère Vineyards & Winery, and this year’s Major Sponsors: Sutter Amador Hospital, American Legion Ambulance Service, Horizon Oxygen & Medical Equipment, Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort, and Mark Twain Medical Center.

To order your tickets, call 209-223-5500, or go online to www.hospiceofamador.org. This event regularly sells out, so don’t delay!

To protect your dog, other pets, yourself and your family, you need to vaccinate your companion. And for the protection of the greater public, the law requires you to vaccinate and license all dogs 4 months of age or older.

09/28/2019 - Mark Twain Medical Center Showcases Local Health Resources at Fall Health Fair
San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Medical Center presents the 21st Annual Fall Health Fair on Saturday, September 28 from 7 a.m. to noon at the Hospital Campus in San Andreas. “Participation in this event is just as enthusiastic now as it was when we started over two decades ago,” notes Doug Archer, MTMC President and CEO. “It’s a tradition – a great opportunity to find out about the latest in local resources for health care, wellness and social services.” He explains this Health Fair includes an especially wide-range of health and wellness professionals, nonprofit entities, and government agencies that collaborate in providing education, support services and lifestyle tools to the local community.

In addition, the event offers low cost health screening and services. Attendees can take advantage of a five-panel blood analysis, including a chemistry panel, thyroid, complete blood count, lipid panel, iron for women, PSA for men, and vitamin D deficiencies ($45); and Bone Density Screenings ($25). Those participating in the blood analysis should not eat or drink anything after 10 p.m. the night before. Adult Flu shots will be administered at no cost.

Archer notes over 40 community partners will be featured at the event. “They value our Health Fair as a great opportunity to offer insights into their areas of expertise including senior support and health services, health insurance information, long term and short term care, hospice, home health, mental health and nutrition. MTMC is proud to continue this tradition.”

Here is what some of the participating organizations have to share about why they are involved:

MACT HEALTH BOARD, INC., Kevin Cornwell, OD --“Access to eye care plays an integral role within health care today. Eye doctors routinely encounter the ocular manifestations of many systemic diseases through an eye exam. Many patients may be asymptomatic, yet have the signs of undiagnosed hypertension or type 2 diabetes in their eyes. Including optometry at health fairs gives patients a better understanding on the importance of receiving routine eye care to maintain their health.”

CALAVERAS COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS, CALAVERAS TRANSIT AGENCY, Amber Collins Executive Director– “The MTMC Health Fair is a great (and free!) resource for agencies to gain exposure with the community, as well as other organizations. This is an ideal venue for Calaveras Connect to share information about our public transit system and how to access the service.”
