Growing Pomegranates~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 02/22/2010 11:17 AM
|
The pomegranate is associated with the most ancient civilization in the Middle East. Judging by some of the earliest records, the pomegranate is native to Persia and the surrounding area. It was also cultivated in ancient Greece and referred to by Greek writers several hundred years B.C., even before the advent of the almond, peach or apricot. Spanish missionaries brought the pomegranate to the New World soon after Cortez conquered Mexico in 1521. As the missions moved north to California, so did the fruits grown by the padres....

Start gardening earlier in spring~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 02/09/2010 09:58 AM
|
By making a raised garden bed or two in the early spring, home gardeners can plant earlier than planting in un-mounded soil. Soil dries and warms up more quickly in the spring in raised beds. Reducing foot traffic on the beds themselves reduces soil compaction, a bane to growing plants. Make the raised beds narrow enough that the center of each bed can be planted, watered and weeded from a footpath beside the bed....

Powdery Mildew~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 02/02/2010 01:07 PM
|
Powdery mildew is a common disease on many types of plants. Powdery mildews generally do not require moist conditions to establish and grow, and normally do well under warm conditions; thus they are more prevalent than many other diseases under our dry summer conditions. The disease can be recognized easily on most plants by the white powdery mycelial and spore growth that forms on shoots, both sides of leaves, and sometimes flowers and fruit. An exception is the powdery mildew that affects tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, artichokes, and some ornamentals, which produces yellow patches on leaves, but often no powdery growth.....

Good Planning Helps Fight Garden Pests~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: thepinetree on 01/25/2010 10:49 AM
|
January is a good time to draw up pest control plans for the spring garden. Apart from insects, pests include diseases, weeds, snails, rodents, birds, dogs and even neighborhood kids with balls. Some simple techniques can protect the garden from animals and birds. A strong fence, for example, will keep out most dogs and soccer balls. Hoop-supported spun bonded row covers can help protect vegetable seedlings from birds, while netting draped over grapes will keep their beaks off vines. ....

January Time to Prepare Soil for Spring Gardens~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/20/2010 09:55 AM
|
A good fertility program is the best way to prepare garden soil for spring planting, and winter is the time to begin the process. Analyzing your soil is the starting point. Take soil samples at several locations in the garden to assess fertility levels. Take samples from six to eight inches deep, the depth most vegetable feeder roots reach. Mix the soil thoroughly for a good, representative sample and use a soil test kit available at local nurseries.....

Dwarf Fruit Trees Add Variety to Landscapes~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/14/2010 10:31 PM
|
Gardeners who like to try new things in the New Year might consider planting dwarf fruit trees, which add colors and shapes to the home landscape and greater variety to the family diet. Most dwarf fruit tree varieties come from grafting one fruit variety or scion onto another that serves as the root system. Dwarfing occurs because of restricted nutrient supply to the scion. Different root systems result in different sizes...
