Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 02/10/2009 03:27 PM
|
Grapes have been a part of the Sierra Foothill’s heritage and tradition for many years. Many homesteads and landscapes over the foothills still have a grape vine - over the wall, along a back fence, or in the old shade tree. Now many people are looking again to the grape vine for beauty, food, enjoyment and pride. Grape arbors serve as accents in the landscape, as a passage way or simply a source of shade in recreational areas and to adorn structures.....

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 02/04/2009 08:51 AM

The Calaveras Farm to Family program is a cooperative effort to help feed the hungry of Calaveras County. Do Your Potted Plants Have Fungus Gnats? ~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/28/2009 09:14 AM
|
Ever notice those irritating little insects that fly out of the soil when you water your potted indoor plants? You are probably seeing fungus gnats. Tiny, non-biting flies, fungus gnats feed and breed in the soil of house and greenhouse plants. Fungus gnats thrive in soils rich in organic material and moisture, where the larvae feed and the adults reproduce. If conditions are especially moist and fungus gnats are abundant, you may notice tiny, narrow slime trails on soil surfaces that resemble slug or snail trails but are much smaller. Found outdoors as well, fungus gnats breed in decaying plant matter, leaf mold, organic mulch, grass clippings, compost and fungi....

Now is bare root planting season~by Ken Churches |
Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 01/14/2009 09:01 AM
|
This is the time of year when foothill garden stores, catalogs and nurseries offer bare root plants for sale. In simplest terms, bare root plants are dormant perennial plants, that are dug from soft planting material and then sold with the soil removed.
