Just this week I spoke with a Foothill resident who was bitten by a kissing bug while in his bed. Within a few hours he found himself in the emergency room at the hospital. Conenose bugs are commonly called assassin bugs. Most members of this family are predators of other insects, but the conenose bugs (also known as kissing bugs), are bloodsucking parasites of a wide variety of domestic and wild animals and humans. In California these bugs are most prevalent in the foothill areas surrounding the Central Valley.....

Calaveras County, CA....The Painted Frogs of Calaveras is a Community Art Project sponsored by the Calaveras Chamber of Commerce. ThePineTree.net has a Fun Contest planned beginning on September 27th and and ending October 20th. Print the "Class of 2008" FROG MAP WE HAVE ENCLOSED and pay a visit to each frog site. Your map will be stamped at the site with a "frog". When you have finished visiting all of the Frog sites, drop off your map at the Calaveras Chamber of Commerce, attention Diane, no later than October 21st, with your name and phone # filled out. We will then hold a drawing for some FABULOUS PRIZES donated so generously by local businesses.... including Two Tickets to the Gala Auction, Kayak rentals from SNAC, A Free Zip Line adventure from Cave and Mine Adventures, CAMPS Dinner Gift Certificate, Golf for Foursome at Greenhorn Creek Golf Resort, Local Wines, Gift Certificates, Gift Baskets and More! The drawings will be held on October 20th. Coffee grounds can be an excellent addition to a compost pile. The grounds are relatively rich in nitrogen, providing bacteria the energy they need to turn organic matter into compost. About 2 percent nitrogen by volume, used coffee grounds can be a safe substitute for nitrogen-rich manure in the compost pile......

Davis, CA....UC Davis bee breeder-geneticist Susan Cobey and Steve Sheppard, a professor and apiculturist at Washington State University, Pullman, Wash., are investigating several races of the Western or European honey bee (Apis mellifera), which European settlers brought to America in 1622.
