Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/03/2008 10:42 AM

Preserving seasonal foods by drying is still useful and convenient, and it has the added advantage of conserving storage space. How does drying preserve food? Basically, sufficient moisture is removed from a food material to prevent its decay; water content of properly dried food can vary from 5 percent to 25 percent. In hot, dry climates, food will be reduced in a few days to a moisture level that preserves them. In any climate, however, you can create satisfactory drying conditions at a moderate expense by using artificial heat and circulating air over the food.....

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 06/25/2008 09:13 AM
Raccoons are wonderful animals to watch, but can be a quite destructive to your property. They dig in vegetable beds, eat fruit off trees and vines, knock down corn and break into bird feeders. Cool Composting is Not a Heap of Trouble~By Ken Churches

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 06/18/2008 09:22 PM
Compost is good, no matter how you heap it. Whether you have fancy containers or just a pile on the ground, you can recycle this year's garden trimmings into compost for next year's flowers and vegetables. Simple piles work well, but, some people worry that their compost pile does not get hot. If you cannot get the pile to heat, all is not lost. The pile will still break down slowly. Weed seeds and disease organisms will not be killed, but you will still have compost eventually.....
