Wheats Fire Update 260 Acres Containment Expected Later Today...Trail Closure Still in Effect

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 08/10/2012 11:31 AM
Bear Valley, CA...Current Situation: The fire is consuming red fir and duff within the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness of the Stanislaus National Forest sending up occasional plumes of smoke. Full containment is expected by the end of today. Under less severe conditions the Forest would take advantage of a natural fire start to achieve resource benefits, however, current local conditions increase the potential for severe fire behavior as we enter the historic high fire danger period for this area. With serious drought conditions over much of the U.S., if the fire grew or moved toward high population recreation areas, fire crews and aircraft could become scarce when needed most. There is also a concern about air quality during the current local heat wave. The Forest has closed several trails in the area (see list below). Because legislation restricts the use of mechanical devices in wilderness areas special authority has been granted to use chainsaws and water pumps. The very steep and rugged isolated terrain is a cause of concern for firefighter safety. About 260 acres have burned. Possible thunderstorm clouds could develop in the area over the next few days....

225 Acre Wheats Fire Starting to Close Trails Near Spicer Reservoir

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/09/2012 10:32 AM
Bear Valley, CA..Current Situation: The fire is consuming red fir within the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness of the Stanislaus National Forest sending up occasional plumes of smoke. Advance of the fire is impeded by dispersed granite rock formations and light winds. Plans include switching out fire crews and establishing indirect fire lines. A fire camp has been established at the Spicer Reservoir Group Campground with a boat ride and a 20 minute hike to access the northern perimeter of the fire. The Forest has closed several trails in the area (see attached map for details). Because legislation restricts the use of mechanical devices in wilderness areas special authority has been granted to use chainsaws and water pumps. The very steep and rugged isolated terrain is a cause of concern for firefighter safety. A Type 3 Incident Commander is in-charge of the response. About 225 acres have burned. Possible thunder storm clouds could develop over the next few days.....

Highway 4 Corridor Fishing Report ~By Bill Reynolds

Posted by: thepinetree on 08/09/2012 12:23 PM
Arnold, CA... The fishing on the highway 4 corridor has been excellent. Make sure to be fire safe at this time of year as it is very dry out in the woods. You must obtain a fire permit for your campsite if you are not using an improved campsite. Make sure you purchase your license before heading up here as we are the only store to sell licenses from Arnold up as we do experience problems with our machine occasionally. Trout plants in our area for the week of July 23, 2012 include The North Fork of the Stanislaus, White Pines Lake...
