Kelly Keel Found Unresponsive In Jail Cell |

| San Andreas, CA...On 12/01/14 at 0740 hours, The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office began investigating an in-custody death at the jail facility. Correctional staff found Kelly Keel (59) of West Point unresponsive in his jail cell during a routine security check. Mr. Keel was being housed by himself at the time of his death. The cause of his death is unknown pending an autopsy.... |

San Andreas, CA...In recognition of National Rural Health Day and the Great American Smoke out on Thursday, November 20th, Calaveras County Public Health Services encourages smokers to put their health first and commit to quitting tobacco for good. Rural areas in California have high rates of tobacco use. The adult smoking rate for Calaveras County was recently estimated at 18.2%, compared to the state rate of 13.8%. In 2012, the smoking rate for youth in grades 9-12 in Calaveras County was 10%. Nearly 9 out of 10 adult smokers start smoking by age 18...

Suspension Lifted, Restricted Burning Hours |

San Andreas, CA....Following recent rain, CAL FIRE’s Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit has lifted the suspension of burning within State Responsibility Area (SRA) in Calaveras, Tuolumne, and the eastern portions of San Joaquin and Stanislaus that are within the SRA effective Monday, November 17, 2014. While cooler temperatures have helped to diminish the threat of wildfire, residents are asked to use caution while conducting debris burns. Burn permits are required for all burning projects and must be completed between the hours of 7 p.m. and 8 a.m. Residents must follow burning requirements and maintain control of their fire at all times. Property owners may be held liable if a fire escapes their control and/or burns the property of a neighbor....
